PKSPL IPB University Organises FGD Discussing Marine Protected Areas

The Centre for Resources and Ocean Studies (PKSPL) of IPB University held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) discussing the Situation Analysis study on the Target Assistance Village in Anambas Conservation Area (KKA), 10/8. This activity is in collaboration with the National Aquatic Conservation Area Workshop (LKKPN) Pekanbaru and Raja Ali Haji Maritime University.

Dr Yonvitner, Chairman of PKSPL IPB University explained that this activity was carried out to increase the effectiveness of conservation areas (KK) for the emerging effectiveness economy of coastal communities around the area. He explained that the activities included identifying the potential of villages within the conservation area in terms of governance, economy, and ecology, as well as an understanding of their utilisation activities.

“The purpose of this situation analysis study is so that any economic activities and utilisation of conservation areas such as capture fisheries, aquaculture and marine tourism in the area can take place in a sustainable manner,” said Dr Yonvitner.

He explained that in accordance with the mapping of the potential of the Anambas Conservation Area (KKA), capture fisheries, aquaculture and marine tourism are regulated utilisation activities for the community. Utilisation in these three areas is directed to be carried out sustainably, maintaining good ecosystem quality and increasing community economic income.

In her preface, Retia Revany, PKSPL IPB University researcher, said that the focus of this activity was to strengthen human resources and institutions for the management of Anambas conservation areas. The FGD also discussed efforts to realise sustainable financing (blue financing) for the management of Anambas conservation areas.

“The FGD also discussed increasing protection of rare, endangered and protected marine species (ETP) and protection of priority habitats. Strengthening compliance with KKA rules and regulations, and increasing benefits for coastal communities through sustainable MPA management,” said Retia Revany.

She also mentioned that the FGD is a forum to determine candidate villages that will be assisted during programme implementation. The selected villages will receive assistance from the USAID Collective programme to improve the welfare of rural communities in conservation areas.

Andriyanto Hanif, Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Manager at LKKPN Pekanbaru, said that KKA has great potential in capture fisheries, aquaculture and marine tourism and history. In addition, he said, KKA is at the forefront of ecosystem protection accompanied by enormous marine and coastal potential, especially coral reefs and mangroves.

The FGD was also attended by the Anambas Islands Regency Bappeda, KKA Fisheries, Agriculture and Food Office, KKA Tourism and Culture Office, KKA Community and Village Empowerment Office, KKA Cooperatives and Micro Enterprises, Trade and Industry Office, KKA Social, Women and Children Empowerment Office, KKA Fisheries, Agriculture and Food Office Capture Fisheries Division, KKA DP3 Aquaculture Fisheries Division, and Bawah Anambas Foundation.
