IPB University Graduate School invites Summer Course 2023 participants to visit the Ornamental Plant Nursery Centre

The Graduate School (SPs) of IPB University invited the participants of Summer Course 2023 to visit the Ornamental Plant Nursery Centre, Sukamantri Experimental Garden of IPB University. Located in Tamansari District, Bogor Regency, West Java, this garden covers an area of 40 hectares and functions as a teaching industry for education, research, community service, agro-tourism and business facilities.

This experimental garden also cultivates various fruit crops and ornamental plants. There are about 170 ornamental plant nurseries maintained by the Centre for Tropical Horticulture Studies (PKHT) of IPB University.

Dr Awang Maharijaya, Head of PKHT IPB University, explained that the Sukamantri Experimental Garden is currently used as a tropical agricultural demonstration garden, technology demonstration garden, collection garden in the form of fruits, vegetables, coffee, nutmeg and various ornamental plants. The main crops grown include durian, avocado, longan and banana. An ornamental nursery also developed around the garden.

“Sukamantri Experimental Farm is also used as a teaching industry, an industry that supports or becomes a vehicle for education. This garden can be used as a place for internships, research, visits and start-ups. Students and the community can learn so that when they are ready, they can do business professionally,” he explained.

He added: “The facilities at the Sukamantri Experimental Farm are very good, so we can provide knowledge on how tropical agriculture can be developed in Indonesia”.

Other than that, Arslan Arshad, an international student at IPB University from Pakistan, said the visit to the Sukamantri Experimental Farm really provided knowledge and information to the summer course participants. “The Sukamantri Experimental Farm is very extensive and is currently used by IPB University as a marketing centre for ornamental foliage plants in the South East Asia region,” he said.

“We thank the manager of the Sukamantri Experimental Garden for giving us a very detailed explanation so that we can learn how to manage experimental gardens properly and correctly,” said Arslan. (HBL/Rz) (IAAS/MKY)
