IPB University has developed three School of People’s Animal Husbandry (SPR)-1111 in Central Lampung District (Lamteng). The declaration was made at the location of the smallholder farmers in Karang Endah Village, Terbanggi Besar Sub-district, Lamteng District, Tuesday (12/9).

Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SKHB) IPB University, Dr Amrozi, stated that SPR is a platform (media) for the downstream process of innovation in animal husbandry and animal health. The three SPRs are SPR Karnadi Jaya Abadi, SPR Berkah Ternak Bersama and SPR Maju Jaya Bersama. Each is located in Terbanggi Besar District, Terusan Nunyai District and Way Pengubuan District.

“SPR is an institutional innovation that has been going on for a long time and continues to this day because it was fostered by a team from the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies (PSP3) IPB University, chaired by Prof Muladno. This institution is very good and feasible to be developed in Lamteng Regency,” he said.

The declaration was attended by around 250 participants including 150 farmers, the Plantation, Livestock and Fisheries Office (P3), PT Great Giant Livestock (GGL), 10 lecturers and a team from the Directorate of Agromaritime Community Development (PMA) of IPB University.

Chairman of PSP3 IPB University, Prof Muladno reported that the declaration this time was the 74th, 75th and 76th of a number of SPR IPB University that had been declared in various regions in Indonesia. The three SPR IPB University is the first fast track programme since its establishment in 2013. This, he said, could be done because of funding support from the Kedaireka Matching Fund programme from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemdikbudristek) led by Prof Agik Suprayogi, a lecturer at SKHB IPB University.

“In the future, the SPR IPB University development programme in Lamteng Regency must already use regional budget (APBD) funding from the local government,” said Prof Muladno.

On the same occasion, the Regional Secretary of Lamteng Regency, Nirlan SH, MM, said that IPB University is very serious in helping the development of the livestock sector in the region. A number of IPB University innovations such as Katulac® and Fedtugrow® (IPB University-PT GGL) have had a real impact on the community.

“SPR Andini Jaya Tiasmojo farmers in Astomulyo Village, Punggur Sub-district have felt the benefits of this innovation last year. We hope that SPRs in these three sub-districts can also utilise the product,” he said.

Nirlan believes that through SPR IPB University, innovation and institutional improvement of farmers in Lamteng Regency can be realised soon. Therefore, next year, his party will develop as many as 15 SPR IPB University in Lamteng. In the near future, there will also be a signing of a cooperation agreement between IPB University and Dinas P3 of Lamteng Regency.

Prof Agik at that moment added, the establishment of SPR-1111 IPB University is a model of the downstream platform of higher education for the community and farmers (Hiper-Madani), through the tetra helix corporation (universities, local governments / district governments, private sector and farmers / breeders). According to him, the position of SPR is very strategic in Hiper-Madani.

“The increasing number of SPRs shows that IPB University’s role in building the world of animal husbandry in Indonesia is increasingly evident. It is hoped that through this Hiper-Madani platform model, IPB University product innovations such as Katulac® and Fedtugrow® can become a necessity for farmers in increasing the productivity and efficiency of their businesses,” said Prof Agik.

Chairman of the Livestock Owner Representative Council (DPPT) of SPR Karnadi Jaya Abadi, Rozi admitted, “We have been raising fattening cattle for a long time. However, we still feel we lack knowledge and technology, so we want to learn from IPB University through SPR. Hopefully, the innovation and presence of IPB University lecturers will give new hope for the progress of cattle farming in our SPR,” said Rozi. (asp/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
