IPB University’s School of People’s Animal Husbandry Comes to Central Lampung
IPB University in collaboration with PT Great Giant Livestock (GGL) and the Plantation, Livestock and Fisheries (P3) Office of Central Lampung District (Lamteng) held a Workshop and Socialisation of School of People’s Animal Husbandry (SPR)-1111 Development at the GGL Training Center Building in Lampung.
The event was attended by Chief of P3 Office, Ir Khresna Rajasa, MM, sub-district Technical Implementation Units (UPTD) in Lamteng District, PT GGL staff, sub-district heads and village heads from three sub-districts namely Terbanggi Besar, Way Pengubuan and Terusan Nunyai.
The Chairman of the SPR-1111 Management Unit (UP) of IPB University, Prof Agik Suprayogi explained that SPR has spread across 14 provinces and 28 districts in Indonesia. Currently there are a total of 69 SPRs, 17 of which have graduated, while 52 SPRs are still in the learning process.
“In 2023, we will develop three SPRs in three sub-districts. Following one SPR that was declared last year in Astomulyo Village, Punggur Sub-district, Lamteng District, namely ‘SPR IPB Andini Jaya Tiasmojo’. It is expected that this year the four SPRs can graduate and be graduated,” said Prof Agik who is also a lecturer at IPB University from the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedicine (SKHB).
According to him, this workshop and socialisation is important considering that these four SPRs are the downstream platform of IPB University’s innovation with PT GGL. This strategic step is considered important as the development of smallholder livestock through the concept of downstreaming university innovations for communities and farmers (Hiper-Madani). “Hiper-Madani is a good model and the only one in Indonesia,” said Prof Agik.
Khresna, the Chief of P3 Service of Lampung Regency, in his opening remarks said that so far, the local government has focused on maintaining the health of livestock. However, there has been no effort on how farmers or breeders gain knowledge and insight into the ways and techniques of livestock cultivation and marketing.
“The activity initiated by IPB University and pioneered by Prof Agik is a learning activity for smallholder farmers in Lamteng Regency. SPR IPB will build the mentality of the farmers to want to move forward collectively, in congregation and in mutual cooperation in developing animal husbandry in the region. I believe the presence of SPR IPB is the best solution for farmers in Lamteng,” he said.
Prof Agik added, SPR IPB is a learning platform to hone mentality, educate superior breeders in organisations and consolidate breeders who are currently still scattered.
“Breeders who pass SPR IPB have the characteristics of one door marketing management, management of technology use and breeding management. For organisational management, it is led by nine breeders of the Livestock Owner Representative Council (DPPT), one of whom is the chairman,” he added.
Prof Agik admitted that the condition of Central Lampung has advanced and has a good business response, considering that it has been fostered by PT GGL. However, according to him, this is not enough because so far farmers have not been given the right and good perspective and mentality as farmers, namely professional, sustainable, willing to work together and unite to move forward together. “Hopefully the results of this workshop can be well realised in 2023 for smallholder farmers in Lamteng Regency,” he concluded.
On the same occasion, a lecturer from the Faculty of Human Ecology (Fema) IPB University, Ir Sutisna Riyanto, MM in his material said that in the SPR-111 IPB curriculum it is more about mental change of farmers. Thus, the participatory learning material provided is 45 per cent changing the mindset, 35 per cent how to do business in mutual cooperation and only 20 per cent discussing the problems of animal sciences and technology.
At this event no less than 50 farmers from three sub-districts of Terbanggi Besar, Way Pengubuan and Terusan Nunyai agreed and were ready to learn at SPR-1111 IPB in the concept of Hyper-Madani. IPB University together with PT GGL also strengthened their partner farmers through Fedtugrow® feed innovation. (ASP/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
