In order to increase collaboration between universities, both at home and abroad, the Faculty of Forestry and Environment (Fahutan) IPB University routinely holds summer course activities. In this fourth year, the Summer course on Forestry and Environment (ForSC2023) carries the theme The Youth Action in Generating Innovative and Creative Improvements of Sustainable Forestry Utilisation.

This ForSC2023 activity was held in blended learning during the period 10-25 July 2023. The activity was held to facilitate young people to increase their knowledge and develop their innovative creativity related to the wise processing of forest products, including sustainable forest management.

"Various activities including exchanging experiences, discussing and also initiating experiences to work together between students and practitioners, both at the national and international levels are some of the critical points targeted in this summer course programme. Appropriate processing of forest products will be able to preserve forests, especially natural forests which are currently decreasing in number," said Dr Mahdi Mubarok, chief executive of the summer course.

Therefore, he said, the challenge of forestry is not just a problem of one or two countries, but a common problem. Thus, the existence of this summer course activity is expected to be able to increase the role and participation of the younger generation in the world, especially in cultivating and preserving forests.

On that occasion, Dean of Fahutan IPB University, Dr Naresworo Nugroho expressed the importance of action from the younger generation in managing and processing forests sustainably. The public lecture was delivered by the Vice Rector of IPB University in the field of Global Connectivity, Cooperation and Alumni, Prof Iskandar Z Siregar who explained various ways to manage forests sustainably.

The ForSC2023, sponsored by PT RAPP APRIL Group, Perum Perhutani and PT RPN, was attended by dozens of participants from five countries. The summer course programme will be equivalent to 2 semester credit systems (SKS) for online participants and will be equivalent to 3 SKS for participants who also take an excursion in Gunung Walat University Forest, Sukabumi.

A total of 23 lectures by international resource persons, three virtual and factual visits and a student competition (Youth Initiative Contest) will be delivered, making the total programme time equivalent to 135 hours. (*/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
