To broaden their knowledge and understanding of marine technology for hydrographic surveys, IPB University students from the Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) visited the Hydro-Oceanographic Naval Technology College (STTAL Hidros).  This excursion study was attended by several students taking the Underwater Detection Engineering course from the Marine Acoustics, Instrumentation and Robotics (AIR) Division.

The arrival of IPB University students was welcomed by the Deputy Commander of STTAL, Marine Colonel (P) Yoyok Nurkarya Santosa, ST, MT.  “Welcome to STTAL Hidros.  Congratulations on enriching yourself with new knowledge and practical experience here," he said.

In addition to excursion studies, this agenda is a forum for hospitality, learning and discussion to continue establishing synergistic cooperation between the ITK IPB University Department and STTAL Hidros in studying science and serving society and the country to produce superior and competent human resources.

Prof Henry M Manik as the lecturer in charge of the course also gave an explanation regarding the hydrographic survey and its application.  According to him, by involving the use of adequate technology and methods, hydrographic surveys can provide very useful information for various interests in the marine sector and related sectors.

"Mapping and understanding of the characteristics of the water column and seabed, including water column imaging, topography, depth information and subsurface structures can be obtained through hydrographic surveys," said the Professor of IPB University in the field of Marine Acoustics and Instrumentation.

The students gained a variety of interesting new insights about the use of hydroacoustic technology in the field of defense, especially navigation, underwater investigation, bathymetry, oceanography to maritime geography.  Not only that, students also get the opportunity to directly visit STTAL laboratories, including the bathymetry laboratory, underwater investigation laboratory, oceanography laboratory and data processing laboratory.

ITK IPB University excursion study students are expected to be able to see, know and understand related to various software, techniques and mechanisms for operating tools, acquisition and processing of data from hydroacoustic instruments such as single/multibeam echosounder, side scan sonar, magnetometer, current meter and others. To share stories about real obstacles and challenges experienced when conducting surveys at sea.

“This excursion visit allows us to dig deeper into hydrographic surveys, especially in technical matters such as calibration methods, data acquisition and data processing.  Here we can also obtain information related to hydrographic survey instruments that can be used for research," said Imam, one of the students who participated in this activity.  (MAM/RAT/Rz) (IAAS/MFR)
