The event for exchanging knowledge about coral reefs, School of Coral Reef Restoration (Scores), was held again with guest star Maria Vanessa Baria-Rodriguez from the University of the Philippines. Maria was invited to explain how the development of research on coral reef ecosystems in one of the countries included in the coral reef triangle, the Philippines.

In her presentation entitled ‘An integrated approach to marine resource conservation and sustainable fisheries management to strengthen coastal communities in Zambales’, Maria explained efforts to protect marine resources and improve the welfare of coastal communities in Zambales. The effort adopts an integrated approach to marine resource conservation and sustainable fisheries management.

Dr Beginer Subhan as Secretary of the Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) IPB University in his remarks thanked Maria for the opportunity to be a speaker in this 11th edition of Scores Masters.

“We know that Indonesia and the Philippines are countries located in the coral reef triangle area. However, compared to Indonesia, knowledge about coral reef ecosystems in the Philippines is still relatively small. With that, I would like to thank Ms. Maria for taking the time to explain the condition of the coral reef ecosystem in the Philippines,” said Dr Beginer.

Maria herself has just completed her research on coral reef ecosystems in the Philippines. This step was taken to realize coral reef restoration by paying attention to the reproduction of each existing coral lifeform.

“Acropora is a coral lifeform that can grow fast. To help restore coral reefs beforehand, we need to see how each lifeform reproduces,” said Maria.

She explained that coral reefs can develop through asexual and sexual processes. After knowing how coral reef life forms are, researchers can determine the right restoration method to embed.

“In the Philippines, as much as 70 percent of coral reef restoration uses substrate enhancement, 19 percent uses asexual propagation and 11 percent uses sexual propagation,” explained Maria.

She also explained that almost restoration of coral reef ecosystems in every country started in Pangasinan, Philippines. Various methods of restoration have been carried out there.

“The development of existing coral reefs will be monitored first in the laboratory and then implemented in nature. This can help see how the coral reef restoration method is right for the growth carried out in each lifeform,” she explained.

On that occasion, Maria also showed the results of her research on Philippine coral reefs. It is hoped that the participants will be inspired to restore coral reefs in Indonesia through the method Maria has used. In the near future, she will also be preparing to publish his research journal in the Philippines. (AFD/RAT/Rz) (IAAS/SHY)
