PSP3 IPB University Engage Cooperation Agreement for the Development of Laying Hen Breeding
Head of the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies (PSP3) IPB University, Prof Muladno signed a cooperation agreement (PKS) with a foreign laying hen breeding company, Hendrix Genetics/SASSO and an East Java parent stock layer entrepreneur, PT Mitra Agro Prima Mandiri, (7/4).
“The cooperation agreement related to the development of laying hens aims to produce superior breeds of laying hens. The female breeders produced by Hendrix Genetics/SASSO were then crossed with local males in Indonesia. The aim of this crossing is expected to be able to create local chicken with a taste resembling native chicken so that it has a selling value in the Indonesian market,” said Prof Muladno.
According to Arya Wishnuardi, SE, MSi as PSP3 adviser to IPB University, the signing of this collaboration is a good start. “From this collaboration, in the future superior chicken products will be produced which will taste like kampong chickens, but with relatively low production costs so that the prices are still competitive,” he said.
He added that the cooperation agreement was divided into two phases. First, the development phase of crossbreeding between SASSO hens and local native chickens. During this process, PSP3 IPB University was able to develop a People’s Chicken Farming School where it would consolidate local breeders.
“During this process, the data generated can also be used as a reference for IPB University students, especially master and doctoral programs as written work,” he added.
As for the second phase, the development of crossbreed chickens will be carried out to test its products on the Indonesian market. In addition to signing the SPK, the meeting was also filled with discussions regarding future follow-ups, namely obtaining permits for the import of female sires from Hendrix Genetics/SASSO.
