Three Lecturers from the Vocational School (SV) IPB University Provide Recommendations from the Climate Change Anticipation Action Plan for Planting

The impact of climate change is felt in all aspects and sectors of life. The agricultural sector which is highly dependent on climate is also affected. Crop failure is not uncommon due to extreme weather. There needs to be anticipatory efforts through action plans and appropriate policies. Discussing this issue, the Vocational School (SV) of IPB University collaborated with the Directorate General of Food Crops, Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia to hold a Propaktani Webinar entitled 'Climate Change Anticipate in Plantations' (03/03).
Dimas Ardi Prasetya, MSi, Lecturer in Environmental Engineering and Management at SV IPB University, explained that the response to global warming in planting includes three things. These include anticipation, mitigation and adaptation.
"The action plan for anticipating climate change in the agricultural sector can be focused on adjusting the food production system, expanding the area of food agriculture and aquaculture, repairing and developing agricultural infrastructure that is climate proof to developing adaptive and innovative technologies," he explained.
According to Dimas Ardi Prasetya, an adaptive farming system can be built starting from mapping climate-appropriate commodities to ensure high productivity opportunities. Followed by the development of superior plant varieties that are tolerant to environmental stress.
“This also needs to be supported by the application of climate information as a basis for planning and decision making. As well as developing soil and plant processing technology to increase environmental adaptability," he added.
He added that farmers also need to get a farming protection system from failures due to climate change. The role of stakeholders is also very important in anticipating the impacts of climate change.
Nurul Jannah PhD, Lecturer in Environmental Engineering and Management at SV IPB University said the stakeholders needed were scientists, farming communities, government, and society. "The strategy that needs to be carried out by stakeholders includes mitigation efforts, prevention efforts and adaptation or adjustment efforts. These efforts need to be carried out actively by every stakeholder in dealing with the reality of climate change," she said.
Dr (cand) Beta Ratnawati, Lecturer in Environmental Engineering and Management at SV IPB University, also added that the simple adaptation efforts by the community to climate change that have been carried out for a long time are the application of planting calendars, planting patterns, and irrigation.
"However, a long-term strategy is still needed in the form of integrated, systematic, and comprehensive agricultural development planning by considering various aspects related to agriculture, especially agro-climatology," she explained.
She also added that there needs to be diversification of food production through the development of superior commodity farming as the core of the farming business. The development of local superior commodities is carried out based on agro-ecosystem conditions. This method is carried out by strengthening cultivation techniques according to local wisdom.
