Prof Arif Satria: Islamic Values Should Guide the Wheel of Development
Islamic values such as gratitude must be a guideline to push humans on the rails of progress through development. This was conveyed by the Rector of IPB University, Prof Arif Satria when giving a tarawih lecture at the Campus Mosque of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Tuesday (28/03).
"We need to learn from the experience of Prophet Moses because today's people include ulil albab, people who learn not only from natural phenomena but also social phenomena," he said when giving a lecture on 'Faith and Development: Challenging the Dominance of Secularism over Development'.
In grateful for independence and development, said Prof Arif, an ethical framework taken from the Holy Qur'an is needed. He elaborated, there are at least seven values that can guide development.
"First, orientation as a learner or ulil albab mentioned in suras Al Iqra and Al Imran. Ulil albab is interpreted as being able to study natural and social phenomena as a provision to become a caliph. They will not stop learning and will continue to update themselves, "said Prof Arif.
Second, orientation towards the future. The future of the world and the hereafter must complement each other to be balanced. Third, orientation towards time and quality of work that determines output efficiency. This can only be achieved by learners who have good leadership skills, especially digital leadership.
"Digital leaders will have negotiation skills as the key in today's era that prioritizes collaboration, so negotiation is important in this digital era. Digital leaders must also have strategic skills with extraordinary vision and dream to change reality. This is a characteristic of fathonah leaders," he added.
Fourth, orientation to inspire each other and collaborate in goodness. According to him, this collaboration must be based on trust. The capital of integrity or tabligh is important to inspire people to lead to progress.
"The Qur'an has taught the value of honesty for Muslims, so this should be the main capital. If people trust each other, it will be easy to collaborate and easy to innovate so that it is also easy to inspire with works with great and sustainable benefits and multiplier effects, "explained Prof Arif.
Fifth, work harder than others. Sixth, love what you do. Both of these are accompanied by high determination and persistence towards passion.
"People who do not have great talent or talent, but have great effort will become great skills because they have a strong will and a good mindset or growth mindset," he explained.
According to him, growth mindset is the driving force of development. Self-confidence and optimism are also capital, especially to encourage industrialization.
"This change in mindset is what makes us move forward. Therefore, our nation will become a great nation if it has self-confidence and a strong mindset," said Prof Arif.
Finally, the value of proactivity and initiative to change the fate of self and nation. He said that the spirit of the Prophet can be an example of his persistence in becoming an agent of change. "In the modern era, society faces various disruptions. However, strong persistence will enable us to survive and move forward," he concluded. (MW/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
