What and Who is Food Estate For? This is The Explanation of IPB University Lecturers

In the Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) RI 2020-2024, food estate is a food production center area in a minimum of 2,000 hectares of land by cultivating polyculture and using an agroecological approach. Dr. Wahyu Budi Priatna, IPB University Lecturer from the Department of Agribusiness, Faculty of Economics and Management (FEM) explained, this food estate can be realized if given enough attention.

According to him, this concept is an integrated food development in a large area with a science-based industrial system. Modern management by utilizing resources optimally and sustainably with environmental insight and strong institutions supported by quality human resources.

"This food estate is like seeing a very large industry but involving farmers and stakeholders in the agricultural sector, so we need togetherness and then planning that may be very mature," he explained in a Propaktani Webinar with the theme "Community-style Food Estate" held by the Directorate General of Crops. Food, Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia (20/9).

Dr. Wahyu assessed that this program was very strategic. Moreover, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, said that this agricultural development is the direction that must be directed. So that the cost of production can compete with the price of the same commodity with other countries. Not only dwelling in one's own country, so cooperation efforts with strong harmony are needed.

“The construction of this food estate is motivated by the soaring demand for world food. Not to mention the turmoil caused by the war crisis. Meanwhile, world food supply is not commensurate with demand,” he said.

The IPB University lecturer added that the rate of land conversion and national food needs are also increasing. The availability of potential land as land for food reserves is quite extensive but has not been exploited optimally. The limited government budget, he said, also requires investors in the development of food estates while still paying attention to the interests of the community.

“Because after all, our farmers must be more advanced and prosperous. As the ideals of the Constitution (UUD) of the Republic of Indonesia," he said.

Actually, he continued, the location of the food estate must meet the aspects of land suitability and the existing conditions of cultivation at the location. Its status is not a disputed land and is not being planned in the same year carrying out similar activities. The financing must also be flexible with various sources and financing schemes.

"All remedial activities require togetherness and cooperation with sufficient funding," said Dr Wahyu.

In its development, he said, the most important thing is siding with farmers and sincerity of intention. Farmers must also be prepared as superior human resources through educated and trained farmer corporations.

"When we succeed in realizing the development of this food estate, we hope to increase national food security, optimize the use of resources, open business opportunities more rationally and efficiently with creative and innovative farmer corporate management," he concluded. (MW/Rz)
