Symposium on Environmental Disaster Risk Mitigation at IPB University: Indonesia is the Place for Disaster Supermarkets
The Natural Resources and Environmental Management Study Program (PSL Study Program) of the Graduate School of IPB University held the International Symposium on the University Network for Disaster Risk Reduction (UN4DRR), (21/7). This activity is carried out online, attended by 108 participants and there will be 100 oral presentation participants from Indonesia and abroad. UN4DRR itself is a consortium consisting of 9 universities from 7 countries, namely Vrije Universiteit Brussels (Belgium), Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (Spain), University of Nicosia (Cyprus), University of Zagreb (Croatia), National University of the Maldives, Paradeniya University (Sri Lanka). , University of Colombo (Sri Lanka), IPB University and Syiah Kuala University.
This event was opened by the Rector of IPB University, Prof. Arif Satria. In his remarks, the Rector said, "We have learned a lot that the COVID-19 outbreak since 2020 has changed the world, including our daily lives, known as the new normal order. Scientists, researchers, students, practitioners, policy makers, and business people have successfully adapted to the current new normal conditions. We must maintain contact with others and make activities possible through various means, including online, like today," said Prof. Arif Satria.
He added that this event is an excellent forum for those involved in multidisciplinary disciplines on emerging issues and trends in disaster management and environmental science. "Knowledge about disaster risk reduction and long-term environmental management should be used to educate the public, especially for the future in managing natural disasters caused by man," he said.
The Rector expressed his hope that this event could generate new perspectives to strengthen the sustainable development agenda related to the environment and sustainability as stated in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Meanwhile, according to Prof. Widiatmaka as the head of the UN4DRR-IPB University team, this activity aims to develop disaster risk management education that is integrated with geographic information systems and remote sensing. “All activities have been carried out since 2020 and will end in 2023. Some of the components of the activity group include curriculum improvement, capacity building, laboratory and equipment development as well as socialization to national and international stakeholders," he said.
For Indonesia, the topic of disaster risk reduction is very important and relevant given the high potential for disasters in Indonesia. Indonesia's location at the confluence of three geological tectonic plates causes Indonesia to be geographically an area with a high level of disaster vulnerability. "In Indonesia, being a disaster supermarket country, it means that there are quite a lot of disasters in Indonesia, ranging from geological disasters, hydrometerological disasters to disasters caused by human activities such as forest and land fires," said Prof Widiatmaka.
The event was attended by speakers from within and outside the country including Dr Raditya Jati, Deputy Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Prof Aris Marfai Head of the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), Prof Marwan Rector of Syiah Kuala University and Prof Jonathan Chan Lead Consortium UN4DRR . In addition to IPB University lecturers and researchers, this event was attended by researchers from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and various universities. The next activity will be the UN4DRR Technical Training which will start on July 25, 2022, at the Dramaga Campus of IPB and in the Smart Classroom, IPB Baranangsiang. (*) IAAS/SYA
