Utilizing Kitchen Waste, IPB University KKN-T Students Create POC in Patengan Village

IPB University Thematic Real Work Lecture (KKN-T) students invited the community in Rahayu Village, Patengan Village, Rancabali District, Bandung Regency, West Java to make Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC). The process of making POC from the initial socialization to harvest was carried out on 4-23/7.

Achmad Alfarizy, one of the KKN-T participants, said that the socialization activity was intended so that the community could optimize household kitchen waste and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers by switching to organic fertilizers. "Through this socialization activity, it is hoped that the community will gain new knowledge about the differences in using chemical fertilizers and organic fertilizers as well as the impact of using fertilizers on both plants and the environment and know the advantages and disadvantages of each fertilizer (chemical fertilizer and organic fertilizer)," said Achmad.

The next activity is collecting kitchen waste and making POC. Making POC takes two weeks for the decomposition process to be complete. At the end of the activity, IPB University KKN-T students distributed the results of the POC to the community in Rahayu Village.

“It should be noted that organic fertilizer is very good for plant growth and development because it will provide more productive and quality growth. Making organic fertilizer is certainly easy. Only by utilizing household organic waste. Anyone can do the socialization and manufacture of liquid organic fertilizer, both students and the general public,” said Achmad.

The KKN-T team hopes that the community will switch from using chemical fertilizers to organic fertilizers. "We hope that the manufacture of organic fertilizer can reduce the problem of household organic waste and empower people to carry out advanced organic farming," he explained. (*)
