PARE Spring School 2022 Held by IPB University Participated by Students from Indonesia, Japan and Thailand


The Populations-Activities-Resources-Environments (PARE) Spring School 2022 has been successfully held by IPB University on March 7-16, 2022, in hybrid format (allowing both online and offline attendance). The event was participated by students from Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand over the course of 10 days. In the opening of this event, Prof Arif Satria, Rector of IPB University, conveyed that the event is held exclusively for chosen students of the eight consortium member universities: Chulalongkorn University, Kasetsart University, Thammasat University, Mahidol University, IPB University, Bandung Institute of Technology, Gadjah Mada University, and Hokkaido University.

With the theme of Sustainable Ecosystem Management to Improve Community Welfare and Environment Quality, Prof Agus Buono as the Head of the Organizing Committee conveyed that IPB University is honored to act as the host of PARE Spring School 2022. IPB University strongly hopes that this event could propel more student mobility programs. For the long term, the event also aims to strengthen the bond between universities and create better understanding as well as collaboration.

This spring school was participated by 29 students, consisting of 15 participants from Indonesia, 9 participants from Japan, and 5 participants from Thailand. Prof Agus explained that in this event, students were given the chance to study the quality of welfare in communities surrounding three rivers in three countries: Ciliwung River in Indonesia, Toyohira River in Japan and Tha Chin River in Thailand.

Through this collaborative program, students would be equipped with valuable skills in their respective fields, including research ability, cross-culture ability, poster making, as well as problem solving in relation to population changes, economic activities, scarcity of resources, and environmental degradation. Besides this, the summer spring activity is hoped to strengthen intercountry relations and collaborations.

As many as seven lecturers were present as speakers at this event, including Prof Hadi Susilo Arifin (IPB University) who presented about Natural Resource and Environmental Management, Dr Allan Sriratana Tabucanon (Mahidol University) who spoke about Sustainable Development, Dr Junjiro Negishi who spoke about Environmental Analysis Student Communication, Prof Puji Lestari (Bandung Institute of Technology) who spoke about the Role of Technology in Emerging Environmental Natural Resources and Its Environment Management, Dr Sandya Babel (Thammasat University) who spoke about Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service, Dr Roto (Gadjah Mada University) who spoke about Local Knowledge and Culture in Managing Natural Resources and Its Environment, as well as Asst Prof Sonthaya Sampaothong (Kasetsart University) who spoke about Economic Valuation Method.
