Tropical Biopharmaca Research Center of IPB University Held a Discussion About Bioprospect of Indonesia's Biopharmaca Resources for Health

The Tropical Biopharmaca Research Center (TropBRC), Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), IPB University, held the 13th webinar with the theme "Bioprospect of Indonesia's Biopharmaca Resources for Health" (06/12). Several speakers presented various topics.

A researcher from TropBRC, Dr Berry Juliandi, expressed that the characteristics of stem cells are regeneration and differentiation into different types of cells. Epigenetics methods for stem cells are divided into DNA methylation and also Histon and non-coding RNA modification.

The Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, IPB University, has researched about nerve stem cells and brain memory since 2008.

"Valeriana officianlis plant is an alternative for anti-epilepsy treatment. The plant contains valproic acid as the active ingredient. It serves as a histone deactylase (HDAC) inhibitor. The HDAC inhibitor adjusts the protein acetylation in histone modification," the lecturer from the Department of Biology explained.

Another researcher of TropBRC, Dr Okti Nadia Poetri, studies the conventional method of antibody production, which is using animals. She explained that antibody is a protein in blood that play a role in the body's defense mechanism. Antibodies are obtained by injecting antigens into animals. It turns out that research on the utilization of egg yolk antibodies in ruminants has not been done yet in Indonesia.

"Antibodies are taken from chicken egg yolk because of the easiness and animal welfare. The antibodies then can be used for disease diagnosis or anti-tetanus and anti-rabies treatment," the lecturer from the Department of Animal Diseases and Veterinary Health said.

According to another researcher from the same department, Prof Bambang Prosoeryanto, Indonesia has a large diversity of flora and fauna. From 50.000 species of plants, 10.000 species are medicinal plants. Three out of four Indonesia's plant extracts have an antiviral activity to toxicity and cow Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus (BSRV).

"The plant hinders virus entry, spread, and release. Combination of interferon and Typhonium flagelliform ethanol extract shows synergy effect as an anti-tumor," stated the Head of Pathology Division of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, IPB University (Ghinaa/Zul) (IAAS/EAZ)
