IPB University Student Helps Villagers Fight Off Brown Planthopper Pest

IPB University students in the International Association of Students in Agriculture and Related Sciences Local Committee (IAAS LC) helped the agriculture group Sumber Jaya in fighting off the brown planthopper pests (6/6). This event was called Ngariung #2 x STD, in Jabal Rahmah Village, Tenjolaya, Bogor District. These students brought Wiwit Kurniati, an expert in plant pest extermination (POPT) in Tenjolaya.

She, an expert a part of the Center of Food and Horticulture Plant Protection (BPTPH) West Java province explained alternatives in controlling the plant hopper problem using refugia plants and plant based pesticides. Wiwit also trained the villagers on how to create these plant based pesticides using natural ingredients that can be easily found.

“This program created by IAAS LC IPB University is very good. Not many youth today want to connect directly with farmers and do field work. I appreciate all their efforts and attention towards the people that can create new innovations and solutions,” said Wiwit Kurniati

Other than bringing a pest exterminator, IAAS LC IPB University also distributed booklets that include information on pest control. The booklet was titled “Hama Wereng Pada Tanaman Padi dan Pengendalian Secara Terpadu”, “Sawah Sakit Hama Wereng Bangkit, Sawah Sehat Hama Wereng Tak Mendekat”, and “Perbanyakan cendawan Lecanicillium sp. Untuk Pengendalian Wereng Batang Coklat” was produced by the Plant Protection Student Association, IPB University.

“We hope that this activity can be the solution so that paddy planted by the villages can be free of pests and reduce chances of crop failure,” said Akhyar Ali Rangkuti, the Project Leader of Ngariung #2 x STD. This event was themed “Pengelolaan Hama Wereng Batang Coklat untuk Menghindari Gagal Panen”. (**/Zul) (IAAS/SYA)
