As many as 80 percent of the World Medicinal Plants in Indonesia
As a tropical country, Indonesia has a variety of plants that function as medicines. This plant is usually blended into herbal concoctions that are widely known as herbs. This traditional herb is widely known by the people of Indonesia as a cure for various diseases. Its efficacy has been tested for generations even today. "Indonesia has 143 million hectares of tropical forests which are home to 80 percent of medicinal plants in the world.
It is estimated that there are around 25,000 to 30,000 plants that have the potential to be used as medicinal plants. The latest research from IPB University experts, identified 1,845 species of herbal plants that can be used as medicine, "said Rudi Heryanto, MSi, researcher of the Center for Tropical Biopharmaca Studies (TropBRC), Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) IPB University in a webinar held by TropBRC , (7/22)
This web seminar is the fifth series that focuses on the development of herbal medicine. Present as presenters were Prof. Dr. Arry Yanuar, expert in the Computational Biomedical and Drug Design Laboratory, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Indonesia. Furthermore, Dr. Farit Mochamad Afendi, IPB University lecturer from the Department of Statistics and TropBRC researcher. Then Dr. Rudi Heryanto, IPB University lecturer from the Department of Chemistry and TropBRC researcher.
Prof. Arry Yanuar said that many herbal medicines are known throughout the world as an alternative medicine to cure diseases. Jamu is a formulation of various herbal plants. Many compounds from nature can be used as medicinal materials. This requires methods to find out the compounds in the material. "Herbs can be found by scientific methods by combining various herbal ingredients. This herbal concoction must pass various clinical trials of herbal medicine before it can be consumed. Herbal formulations can use a variety of methods, one of which is using ethnopharmacological networks. This approach is applied to natural materials with certain activities using experimental data, "he said.
On this occasion Dr. Farit Mochamad Afendi added information that each plant has different properties. There are even plants with various properties to cure various diseases. Some are specific to certain diseases and many also have general benefits. The skill in understanding this property is important for concocting herbal concoctions. "The plants most often used in making herbs are ginger and turmeric. Some plants have a function to relieve pain, antibiotics, stimulants and other functions. The development of herbal medicine must be carried out by means of a practical approach based on the concept of multi-component, multi-target and synergy, "said Dr. Farit. (IAAS / NAS)
