Elsevier Ranks IPB University 1st in the World for Oil Palm International Research Publication

According to Elsevier Research Intelligence, Singapore (2020), about Evidence-Based Policy Making for Indonesia, the total number of international scientific articles which are indexed at reputable data centers show that IPB ranks first in the word with 69 articles of research in oil palm. University of Goettingen (UGOE) from Germany ranks 2nd with 42 articles, followed by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) with 35 articles, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) with 26 articles, and Center for International Forestry Research with 24 articles. Those 5 institutions are active in conducting oil palm researches on several main topics, such as plantation, biodiversity, environment, certification, sustainability, socio-economy, small farmers, land vegetation/cover, and many more.

IPB University has been undertaking research collaborations with the University of Goettingen (Germany) and CIFOR through various research projects like OPAL, GCRF-Trade Hub and CRC990-EFForTS. These partnerships result in the creation of a pool of experts, expansion of international networks, infrastructure of field research, training/lecture modules and innovative products. Indonesian government commitment on oil palm studies is evidenced by financial aids by Kemenristek-BRIN, Management Body of Oil Palm Plantation known as BPDP, aside of private companies and other sources, who has given important contribution in supporting oil palm research realms in IPB University.

IPB University’s Rector, Prof. Dr. Arif Satria, mentioned that the integration of both upstream and downstream of oil palm plantation research is highly important to ensure the continuity of oil palm industries in Indonesia which is a significant contributor to Indonesia’s foreign exchange. Through a partnership with Cargill, IPB University has built an oil palm teaching farm in Jonggol, West Java, which already reached harvesting stage. The teaching farm acts as a learning facility for students and for other parties in the topic of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP).

IPB University has also designed Precipalm, a precise fertilizer technology for more efficient oil palm fertilizing. In term of biodiversity and productivity enrichment, IPB University together with University of Jambi, University of Tadulako, and University of Goettingen has made a “biodiversity enrichment planting” demo plot of around 100 hectares in Jambi. The plot is currently being observed and has already been referenced for a similar research and a replanting design experiment. Down streaming of oil palm is also a research focus of IPB University. This is done through product innovations like the substitute for imported surfactants which supports Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technology for aged oil wells. Besides that, through startups, IPB University has marketed an eco-friendly biomaterial innovation: a motorcycle helmet made from under-utilized fibers of fresh fruit.

IPB is actively working with different sectors in holding summer course program on sustainable oil palm oil (like agribusiness) for foreign participants, a supporting certification program for Roundtable on Sustainable Oil palm Oil (RSPO), Indonesian Sustainable Oil palm Oil (ISPO) and more to come. In regard to the achievement, IPB University’s rector, Prof. Dr. Arif Satria, will keep encouraging the efforts of quality betterment of oil palm research in Indonesia. One of those efforts is the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach for bigger and more sustainable impact.
