Corona Virus Can Attack Livestock Up To Whales

Postgraduate School Primatology Study Program and Primate Animal Study Center (PSSP), Research Institute and Community Service (LPPM) IPB University held Tea Break Talk with the topic "Corona Virus Infection in Animals and Zoonotic Aspects". The event was held in the Discussion Room of the Primate Animal Study Center, Bogor (26/2) and was attended by participants from various circles.

According to Dr drh Diah Iskandriati, PSSP Senior Researcher, besides attacking humans, it turns out that the corona virus can also infect a variety of animals from livestock and poultry, pets, laboratory animals and wildlife.

Corona virus from the Coronaviridae virus family has four genera namely Alpha-, Beta-, Delta- and Gammacoronavirus. Alpha- and Betacoronavirus infect mammals (humans, pets, livestock, laboratory animals, wildlife including primates and bats). Whereas Delta- and Gammacoronavirus mostly infect birds or birds except Gammacoronavirus which also infects water mammals such as the Beluga whale and Dolphin.

"Until now there are seven types of Corona viruses from the genus Alpha and Betacoronavirus that infect humans. Four of them cause mild flu symptoms while the other three cause severe respiratory infections to death. The three are known as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), MERS (Middle-East Respiratory Syndrome), and currently epidemic COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease of 2019), "he said.

In addition to the corona virus that infects humans, according to him many other corona viruses also infect animals. One of them is the corona virus infecting cats' pets. Coronavirus that infects cats is known as Feline enteric coronavirus (FECoV) which commonly infects the digestive tract.

"However, there are five percent of cats infected with FEC that can become severe in the animal's body, causing Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). Namely inflammation of the peritonium in cats that are fatal and the virus mutates into FIPV. If it becomes FIP, then the vaccine will be ineffective for this disease, "said Dr. Diah

Meanwhile, Corona Virus in dogs called Canine enteric coronavirus (CECoV) can cause gastrointestinal infections and is transmitted through animal waste. In addition there are other corona viruses that infect the respiratory tract of dogs and many occur in dog storage facilities. This virus is named Canine Respiratory Coronavirus (CRCoV).

"Pigs are the most reported animals that can be infected with coronavirus, both from the genus Alpha- and Betacoronavirus. "Most of the corona virus infections in pigs cause gastrointestinal disturbances and few cause respiratory disorders," he added.

Next Dr. Diah stated that cattle and horses were also reported to be infected with corona virus, and usually caused a decrease in milk production in cows and disrupt the digestive tract in both animals. Corona virus found in cows (Bovine coronavirus, BCoV) is close to genetic relationship with corona virus in humans (HCoV-OC43). Whereas corona virus in horses (Equine coronavirus, ECoV) is reported to have a genetic relationship quite close to BCoV.

The corona virus also infects poultry, such as chickens and turkeys. Usually from the genus Gammacoronavirus. Laboratory animals such as mice, rats, rabbits and guinea pigs are also reported to be infected by the corona virus.

"In primates, there is one report from the oldest primate research center in the world namely in Sukhumi, Russia, in 1982-1986 which reported a natural infection of the corona virus causing digestive disorders and pneumonia in rhesus monkeys and baboons. The corona virus is also found in aquatic mammals such as sea lions, beluga whales and dolphins, "concluded Dr. Diah.
