IPB University Students: Combination of White Tea, Black Tea and Green Tea Overcome Breast Cancer


Tea is a plant that is widely known and cultivated by the world community including Indonesia. The chemical compounds of polyphenols found in tea leaves play a role in anticancer activities. This is found in the literature which shows that polyphenols in tea leaf extract have the effect of inhibiting the formation and development of tumors in different organs.

Based on the type, tea is divided into four types, namely white tea, black tea, green tea and oolong tea. White tea is one type of tea whose production is still very minimal, so its use in research needs to be formulated with high-yielding black tea and green tea.

IPB University students from the Biochemistry Study Program namely Ainul Mardhiyah, Rahmania Sonda, and Harfi Wahyu Laela made Three Tea, a combination of three teas for anticancer. Their research entitled "ThreeTea: Formula of White Tea, Black Tea and Green Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) and its Potential as Anticancer included in the 2019 Student Creativity Program (PKM) was guided by Dr. Ir Akhmad Endang Zainal Hasan, MS from the Department of Biochemistry , Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), IPB University.

This study aims to determine the potential formula of white tea extract, black tea and green tea on Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model organism and the effect of its optimum formula on MCF-7 cancer cell activity (Michigan Cancer Foundation-7). MCF-7 is a one-layer cell that resembles epithelial cells and is taken from the site of pleural metastatic effusion in breast cancer patients.

MCF-7 cells are cancer cells that are resistant to various treatments such as chemotherapy and caspase-3 mutations. So that one way that can inhibit these cells is inhibition with cell proliferation.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a model organism that can be used for basic research on ecological ecological cells. Its use as a model organism because yeast cells can quickly divide and its growth and division can be effectively controlled by environmental conditions. The use of organism models in anticancer research is based on the principle that the compounds tested can inhibit S. Cerevisiae growth in growth media.

"From the results of MCF-7 cancer cell activity testing with tea extract formulations, producing the formula with the highest MCF-7 cancer cell inhibition activity was a formula with 100 percent green tea with inhibition of 97.56 percent," explained Ainul Mardhiyah as Chair of the PKM Group.

In addition, the results of this study will be published in the International Journal of Pharmacy so that it can be useful as a reference for studies related to anticancer using tea. The International Journal of Pharmacy is one of the international journals indexed by Scopus in the Q3 ranking criteria. (NR)
