Dosen Mengabdi IPB University Socialize Scientific Herbalism at Cibanteng Village

Institute of Research and Community Service (LPPM) of IPB University sends lecturers to serve for Cibanteng Village, Ciampea District, Bogor Regency to run the Dosen Mengabdi 2019 (Dedicated Lecturers 2019) programme. One of the lecturers that have been pitched in is from the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Dr Husnawati, who focused on the use of biochemistry and scientific herbal medicine for medications held on Thursday (4/12) at Cibanteng Village, Bogor.

In this socialization, Dr Husnawati explained and recommended that mothers are expected to live a healthy lifestyle. Healthy or "SEHAT" sentences can be interpreted as S for Seimbang gizi (Balanced nutrition), E for Enyahkan rokok (Stop smoking), H for Hindari stress (Avoid stress), A for Awasi kondisi tubuh (maintain the body condition) and T for Teratur olahraga (Exercise regularly) also coupled with prayer and worship.

"The community also has to maintain a good body condition, by checking the blood pressure, glucose, and blood cholesterol every six months (for normal conditions), if you have a high blood pressure it is recommended to check the condition of own body in three months. Actually, in our body, there is a signal from the body such as the colour of urine, pain, fever, functio laesa, and others. We can feel this signal, for example in the colour of urine. When the condition of our body is in good health, it will be clear yellow, while in the condition of liver disorders such as hepatitis  the colour of urine will be brown like tea and should be checked immediately, "he said.

In addition, Dr Husnawati also informed about the scientific herbs, which in general the residents sometimes had used them from plants that are often found either in gardens, yards or on the road, such as brotowali leaves and sembung leaves. This scientific herbal medicine is an effort and process of scientifically proven herbal medicine through research based on health services that have been recognized by the Indonesian Minister of Health in 2010.

He added, treatment using herbal medicine has been applied in several health centres and hospitals in Indonesia. These medicinal ingredients are easily found and may even be around the yard of the house, i.e cat's whiskers leaves, kepel leaves, curcuma leaves, sembung leaves, secang wood, dutch teak leaves, kemuning leaves, turmeric rhizomes, curcuma rhizomes, ginger leaves, meniran leaves, brotowali leaves and sambiloto leaves.

These medicinal plants have been certified to treat diseases, such as mild hypertension, gout, dyspepsia (stomach diseases, such as mag), hypercholesterolemia and diabetes. However, the use of these plants must be in accordance with the dose given. This scientific herbal medicine has also been certified so that it is safe for the body.

Dr Husnawati explained, the use of herbal medicine has been passed down from generation to generation from our ancestors and has proven its benefits for body health. "We should be able to make our own herbal medicine with herbs that have been described earlier so that the scientific herbal medicine can be made by yourself according to the dosage. Hopefully,  with this socialization, the knowledge can be applied in Cibanteng village and be useful for the residents, "he explained.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Cibanteng Village, Sakim expressed his gratitude to LPPM IPB University, who had invited the lecturers to socialize the use of scientific herbal medicine for treatment to bring benefit for the community. "Hopefully this socialization can provide benefits to Cibanteng villagers and can be utilized continuously," he added.

The same thing was conveyed by the representatives of Cibanteng village mothers, Naupal, who said that the socialization on the use of medicinal plants for health by IPB University's Dedicated Lecturers served very well and was beneficial for the community. It is hoped that this activity will continue so that residents around the campus, especially the Cibanteng village, gain knowledge that is beneficial to health, especially for the improvement of the village.

Furthermore, this activity carried out discussions and sharing concerning the use of biochemistry and scientific herbal medicine for treatment. And was attended by the mothers of Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) and Posyandu as well as fathers and the adolescence. The Mothers are very enthusiastic and interested to ask or tell about their health condition or their children. (IAAS/MRA)
