IPB University Holds a Policy Brief Training Journal on Agricultural and Environmental Policy Briefs

The Center for Agriculture and Rural Development Studies (PSP3) Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) IPB University collaborates with the Directorate of Scientific Information and Publication to organize a Policy Brief Writing Training activity in the Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Policy Research (JRKPL), 30-31 October 2019 at the IPB Campus in Baranangsiang, Bogor.

The activity was carried out as part of an acceleration in the interest in writing articles in the form of policy briefs. Prof. Anja Meryandini, chief editor of JRKPL said, this activity became a media for JRKPL promotion to all academic and researchers in the ministries, research institutions and universities regarding the existence of scientific writing formats in the form of policy briefs.

"The need for a forum to express ideas, ideas and thoughts into something that is written is needed lately, related to policy making," said Dr. Sofyan Sjaf, Head of PSP3 LPPM IPB University. Dr Sofyan Sjaf continued that, "The existence of JRKPL is a very important forum for researchers to be able to convey their thoughts to policy makers."

The same thing was also conveyed by Dr. Akhmad Faqih when opening the training activities. "The thoughts of researchers tend to focus on one problem, but the thinking of policy makers tends to be dynamic and jumping up and down in the direction of policy making, so there needs to be synchronization in uniting existing thinking through the science-policy interface process. Writing a policy brief is needed as a forum for delivering policy recommendations in written language that can be quickly and easily read by policy makers and compiled on the basis of the results of scientific research, "said Dr. Faqih.

This activity was held as an effort to revitalize JRKPL which had been vacuum in the past year. Besides to awaken the academic culture of writing articles in the form of policy treatises.

Professor of IPB University from the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Hadi Susilo Arifin explained about the techniques of writing scientific articles and tips or strategies in preparing scientific articles in the format of policy treatises. Policy treatise articles are written in popular language that is easy to read and digest by policy makers, so the purpose of the writing is to be read quickly by stakeholders.

While Professor of IPB University from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Prof. Y Aris Purwanto gave material on plagiarism in the world of scientific article writing. Plagiarism which includes fabrication, falsfication and plagiarism. Prof. Aris also explained the technique of using plagiarism checking applications, so that participants can be more careful in writing so as not to get caught up in writing that tends to be plagiarism, "he explained.

Dr. Kaswanto, a lecturer at IPB University from the Faculty of Agriculture, said the format of writing a policy treatise is different from writing scientific articles in general. "The format of the policy treatise article begins with key statements, policy recommendations, then continues with the introduction, and then submits the current situation to the issues discussed, data collection methods, and ends with the delivery of analysis and alternative solutions. This difference really needs to be conveyed to the trainees. This format is what we need to practice, because this is different from the usual, "he explained. (AVR)
