Become Professor, Rector of IPB University Settled the Promise

Based on the Decree of the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Menristekdikti) of the Republic of Indonesia, starting from October 2019 Arif Satria who is now the Rector of IPB University has been appointed as Permanent Professor in the Field of Ecology-Politics at IPB University. Arif was relieved by this degree because it was a dream from the start as a lecturer. “At the same time pay off my promise to my parents. I cannot repay all my parents’ love so far except with works like this. Hopefully this professor’s title can make my parents happy and proud,” Arif said.

Every time Arif’s parents always ask when he reaches the highest academic peak as a professor. With this degree, Arif feels compelled to be more productive in producing academic works. “The title of professor is not the end of the academic journey, but we must consider it as the beginning of the journey. So that there must be further work that is better in the future. However I was raised by IPB University. It is time for me to continue to work for the progress of IPB University,” Arif said .

Arif Satria, born in Pekalongan, Central Java, on 17 September 1971 to the couple Mr. Faruk Hasan and Mrs. Sri Utami. The second son of 3 siblings is married to Retna Widayawati and is blessed with a son Zafran Akhmadery Arif (20 years) and a daughter Sweetyandari Nidya Areefa (10 years).

This father of two children completed his formal education from elementary to high school in Pekalongan. Arif was an outstanding student, evidenced by being an exemplary 1 junior high school student in 1986 and an exemplary junior high school student in 1989. In addition to achieving academically, Arif also demonstrated his leadership abilities as student council president since middle school.

In 1990, Arif Satria continued his studies at IPB University through the IPB Entrance Invitation (USMI). During his time as a student, he was active as a student leader, such as the IPB Student Senate Presidium, National Director and co-founder of the International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Science (IAAS) of Indonesia.

Graduated from the Agricultural Socio-Economic Department, Faculty of Agriculture IPB University in 1995, then continued his Masters in the Rural Sociology Program IPB University graduated in 1999, and completed his Doctoral Program in Marine Policy, Kagoshima University, Japan in 2006.

Arif was appointed as a lecturer in the Department of Social and Fisheries of the Faculty of Fisheries of IPB University in 1997, then in 2019 he obtained the title of Permanent Professor of the Faculty of Human Ecology (Fema) IPB University in the field of Political Ecology.

Until now, he has graduated 43 scholars, 48 masters and 14 doctors. In addition to his main duties as a teacher, in 2017 he was given the mandate as the Rector of IPB University for the 2017-2022 period. Previously, he served as Dean of the Fema for 2 periods (2010-2017).

In addition, other positions at IPB that had been carried out were the Director of Research and Strategic Studies of IPB University (2008-2010), Secretary of Population, Political and Ecological Studies, IPB University Department of Communication Science and Community Development (2007-2010), Head of Community Empowerment Division Coastal, Coastal and Ocean Resource Study Center (PKSPL) IPB University  (2006-2008), Head of Coastal Community Agrarian Program, Center for Agrarian Studies (PKA) IPB University (1999-2002), Secretary 2 Department of Fisheries Socio-Economic, IPB University Faculty of Fisheries (1998- 2002), Executive Secretary of the Institute of Information Resources (LSI) IPB University (1997-2000), and Secretary of the Rector of IPB University (1996-1997).

Arif Satria also held a number of positions in other agencies or organizations. Since 2018 until now, he has served as President Commissioner of PTPN Holding. This young rector has also served as an Advisor to the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (2012-2019), Member of the Indonesian Fisheries Public Corporation Supervisory Board (2013-2017), Member of the Indonesian Maritime Council (2013-2017), Member of the Indonesian Tuna Commission (2012-2014), Deputy Chairperson of the International Association of Indonesian Scientists (2009-2011), Member of the National Commission on the Study of Fish Resources (2008-2011), Expert Team of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (2001-2002), Chair of the Central Board of Management of the Indonesian Agricultural Association (PISPI) 2010-2015), Chairperson of the PISPI Expert Council (2015-2020), Chairperson of PPI Kagoshima Japan (2004), Chairperson of the Editorial Board of the Japanese PPI Innovation Magazine (2004-2005), Presidium of the Bogor Islamic Student Association Alumni Corps, Chairman of the Indonesian Muslim Scholars Association (ICMI) Bogor Orwilsus, Panelist Team of Presidential and Presidential Election Debate Debate Committee (2014 and 2019), Chairman of the University Network for Indonesian Export Development (UNIED) (2018-2019), and Chair of the Indonesian Rector Forum (2020).

In addition, he has been active in several International Professional Organizations including: American Fisheries Society, International Institute for Fisheries Economics and Trade (IIFET), International Association for Study of the Commons, Japan Regional Fisheries Society, and Japan International Fisheries Research Society.

Arif Satria is active as a guest speaker at various international forums in various countries in America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. He has an important role in a number of prestigious international forums, some of them as the Indonesian Delegation at the Rio Earth Summit +20 organized by the United Nations (UN) at Rio de Jeneiro Brazil (2012), as speaker at the high official forum organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome (2019).

In the field of research, Arif Satria is active in an international consortium, the Community Conservation Research Network Project (2012-2018) based in Canada. He also received research grants from Kemenristekdikti on 4 research titles in a total of 6 years (2011, 2012, 2016-2019). In addition, a number of research collaborations with government agencies and international Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) were also carried out.

These studies then deliver Arif Satria in pursuing his professor’s title. So that during his career hundreds of popular articles and scientific articles have been published both nationally and internationally. These articles are then adapted so that Arif Satria has a Scopus 7 H-Index and a Google Scholar 16 H-Index.

In addition, he is also active as a reviewer of international journals published in Springer and Elsevier. Other works resulting from Arif Satria’s ideas and thoughts were also published in various self-written books (single author), first author, editor and contributor in book chapters including (1) Dynamics of Modernization of Fisheries Social Formation and Fisherman Mobility (sole author), ( 2) Fisheries Globalization: Indonesia’s Reposition? (first author) (3) Coastal and Marine for the People (sole author), (4) Towards Marine Decentralization, (5) Introduction to Coastal Society Sociology (sole author), (6) Towards Decentralization of Fisheries Resource Management (first author), (first author), ( 7) Fishermen’s Political Ecology (sole author), (8) Towards Pro-People and Pro-Environment Marine Conservation (co-author) (8) Managing Coastal and Inland Waters published by leading publishers Springer (Editor and contributor to book chapter authors), (9) Introduction to Coastal Society Sociology (sole author), (10) Maritime and Fisheries Politics (sole author), (11) Marine and Indigenous Peoples (book chapter editors and contributors), (12) Governing The Coastal Commons published by Routledge Publisher (book chapter contributor), and will soon be published, namely a book entitled Politics of Natural Resources (sole author).

The Rector who likes to play badminton and compose songs is also actively voicing ideas and ideas for the advancement of the nation through mass media, both print, television and online. His contribution of ideas and thoughts has also become a reference in a number of national policy formulations.

During his service at IPB University, Arif Satria received the 10-year Satyalencana award from the President of the Republic of Indonesia (2013). Some of the other awards he received include the Second Winner of the Academic Leader Award – Lecturer with Additional Assignments as Rector of the Legal Entity State University (PTNBH) (2019), Academics Concerned about Counseling and Human Resources for Fisheries – KKP (2013), Kagoshima University Network Ambassador (2011), Outstanding Intellectual Property Award in the Field of Science (2009), The First Winner of the Yamamoto Award (2008), and 3rd Place for IPB University Achievement Lecturer (2007).
