IPB University Receives Three ISCO-ISS 2019 Awards
Department of Land Science and Land Resources (ITSL), Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University made a brilliant achievement at the International Seminar and Congress of the Indonesian Soil Science Society (ISCO-ISS) in Bandung. The event which was held on 4-6 August 2019 was one of the annual events of the Indonesian Soil Science Association (HITI).
On this occasion, IPB University won two Best Presenter awards in the category of student and lecturer. Rizal Habibi Gumbara won the student category with a study entitled "A Comparison of Cation Exchange Capacity on Organic Soils Determined by Ammonium Solutions Buffered at Some pHs Ranging between Around Fields pH and 7.0". For the lecturer category, there was Dr. Ir. Syaiful Anwar, M.Sc, with a study entitled "Increasing pH due to Amelioration of Tropical Acid Soils not Always Reduce Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn Availability".
"My research needs more time so everything must be well prepared. I made preparations carefully by practicing the presentation before the seminar. The participants were lecturers, researchers, representatives of universities and institutions, both from Indonesia and overseas, and Chair of the International Soil Science Society, so it was enough to make me nervous before the presentation. However, I managed to overcome it well," explained Gumbara.
Meanwhile, Dr. Syaiful Anwar conveyed about his research. "My research is ordinary. However, I think the assessment was more on how to present and answer the questions, time management, clear delivery, attractiveness, modesty, and to-the-point presentation materials," he said.
On the other hand, to enliven this annual HITI event, a Soil Judging Contest was held by the Soil Science and Land Resources Student Association (Himatan) of Padjadjaran University. The ITSL Department of IPB University sent two teams and successfully won 1st place. "Together with Muhammad Anis Fuandi and Bayu Arya Santosa, we formed a compact team. The key to our success was good time management and mutual trust with teammates' abilities. This made no long debate that would take up much time during the soil judging activity," said Ira Hayu, a member of the ITSL team of IPB University.
In the event, there were various activities such as plenary discussion sessions related to the importance of land as a life support associated with smart farming, symposium related to land resource management, especially in oil palm plantations, research oral and poster presentations, and the congress of the Indonesian Soil Science Association (HITI) containing the responsibilities of the former Chairman/management and the election of a new Chairman.
