IPB University Students Invent Cookies from Fish Bones

Students of IPB University took advantage of fish bone waste and transformed it into a commercial food product. Through the Student Enterpreur Creativity Program (PKM-K), Raisa Adila Sopiani, Diva Agimas Novansa Putri, Salsabila Naura Kamilia, Rita Syafitri, and raden Laditarasa Ilyankusuma who were supervised by Anna Vipta Resti Mauludyani, SP, M. Gizi made ZITE (Zwieback from High Calcium Fish Bone) cookies from fish bones.
According to Raisa, ZITE is an alternative product in the form of high calcium cookies which are made from fish bone flour. Fishbone flour is high in calcium and amino acids and can help in the sufficiency of our daily nutrition.
“Fish bone flour which we obtained from PT. Garmelitha Lestari, was transformed by us into cookie dough. This fish bone flour already has a patent number and is trusted and safe to consume. Our cookie products are packaged using standing pouches which are lined with aluminum foil. This alumunium lining was chosen because it protects the quality of the cookie products. ZITE was also created with a special formula to have a unique and delicious taste,” she explained.
Raisa explained that the ZITE ingredients were fish bone extract, margarine, eggs, fine sugar, flour, cornstarch, chocochips, baking powder, and cocoa powder. Meanwhile the utensils used and needed are a bowl, mixer, tray, brush, molds, scale, oven, and gas stove. ZITE products have a production price of Rp. 12.091,00. With that price, ZITE will be sold to consumers at Rp. 17.000,00 and at Rp. 16.000,00 for resellers.
“ZITE Products are expected to be a healthy snack for the futre and as the pioneer for high calcium cookies in Indonesia. Zite also has a high calcium content which will minimalize any calcium insufficinecies among the Indonesian people. With the presence of ZITE, teens can have healthy snack reference which is high in nutrition. With the tagline “Your Future Snack” ZITE can be position its product in the hearts of the people of the future because their calcium intake is sufficient,” she explains.
The business development in the future by increasing production, expanding the market, and getting involved with various young enterpreneur events, increasing the development of the product according tot he market. Expanding its markets to shops, supermarkets, campus canteens, and others. Besides that, maintaing the quality of the product must be done in order to maintain the trust of the consumers by a certification from the Household Food Industries (PIRT) and a halal certificate.
