Hirmas Fuady Putra, M.Si, a young lecturer at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, IPB University (FMIPA of IPB) became the resource person of the Training Course on the Management of Sustainable Tourism Destinations in the Geopark Area of Belitung, Wednesday (15/5). This activity was held by the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) as a part of the preparation of the Belitung Geopark visitation by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in this year.

On this occasion, Hirmas delivered the material ‘Management of Sustainable Tourism Destinations’ based on the criteria of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The man who is also the Chairman of the Monitoring Center of Sustainable Tourism Observatory (MCSTO) of Tanjung Kelayang, said that the Belitung Geopark is a tangible manifestation of Sustainable Tourism because it has the potential to meet 41 criteria and 105 GSTC indicators.

“All Geosites in Belitung Geopark must be able to communicate with each other and work together to meet the four pillars of Sustainable Tourism, namely sustainable destination management, economic benefits, cultural benefits, and environmental conservation. In addition, the geosite at Bukit Peramun, which is also the field station of the Department of Biology, IPB FMIPA, has even applied the GSTC criteria for the past few years,” added this lecturer who was also born in Belitung.

Furthermore, the Biology Department of IPB and the Belitung Regency Government have collaborated to make the Belitong Geopark a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG) since 2018. Activities that had been carried out included the Summer Course on Biology of Belitong Geopark in November 2018 and habitat exploration. This collaboration is a form of the role of the Department of Biology in biodiversity management activities for the prosperity of the Indonesian people, one of which is through sustainable tourism activities.
