Three IPB Teams Were Granted Handful Titles at International Food Product Development Competition
Three student teams from Department of Food Science and Technology, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) were granted various titles in the Food Product Development Competition (FPDC) at Jakarta International Expo, on October 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The "Yo! Bran" team (M. Rizal Pratama, M. Fakhrian Irsali and Priliani Madina) won “The First Place” in “Beverage” category, whilst the "Mapleto" team (Qurrata Ayu'ni, Yogie Rivaldy and Michael Oscarius) won “The Best Innovation Idea” in “Food” category, and the "Ricuma" team (M. Irfan Fathoni, Abi Hakim Mandala and Windy Khairunnisa) won “The Best Display” in “Beverage” Category. The “Yo! Bran” is non-fat skim milk fermented beverage containing bran and high prebiotic and prebiotic fibers—useful to prevent people’s risk exposure to non-communicable diseases (heart disease, hypertension, diabetes) and help digestive process; whereas “Mapleto” is jam made of orange peel based thickener, contains spices in “secang” form acting as bioactive component to reduce cholesterol; and “Ricuma” is a traditional drink type widely-known as “kencur rice” made of brown rice, “temu manga” and ginger, contains bioactive compounds (polyphenols and antioxidants) to reduce degenerative diseases risks (cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes mellitus) and improve body's immune system. FPDC was Southeast Asian-scaled competition that focuses on developing food processing based on local ingredients, held by IPB Food Technology Student Association supported by UBM in collaboration with the Asian Food Ingredient, and participants originated from universities all around Southeast Asia. This competition is divided into two categories: “Food” and “Beverage”. The involved judges were lecturers from IPB Food Science and Technology, Kasetsart University–Thailand and industries representatives. Afterwards, the forthcoming plan is to expand the business and conduct evaluation regarding packaging and other aspects.
