Indonesian Prospective Young Scientists, Compete Competency in National Science Festival 2018 at IPB

Entering Industry 4.0 era, technology is bit by bit replacing human’s role. Industry 4.0 is marked by integrating physical, technology and biological components. In the relation of technology’s role replacing human’s role, Rector of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Dr. Arif Satria gave examples of several professions that will be replaced by machine or robots those are pilot, machinist, telemarketer and accountant.

“Although many professions will be replaced by robots, but human still has abilities which cannot be replaced by robots. Those abilities are critical thinking, complex problem solving, leadership, communicative, collaborative and learner,” said Dr. Arif Satria when opening National Science Festival 2018 at Graha Widya Wisuda (GWW), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), (24-25/11).

In this event of reasoning competition which was participated by about 3000 participants from Senior High Schools (SMA) in Indonesia, these Indonesian prospective young scientists competed for becoming the best. Brought up the theme of Revolution of Science, this National Science Festival 2018 has been held for 16 times by Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA).

General championship  of National Science Festival 2018 was achieved by SMAK Penabur Gading Serpong. As for other schools which obtained championship are SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo, SMAN 11 Garut, SMAN 1 Cianjur, MAN Insan Cendekia Serpong, SMKN SMAKBO, SMA 11 Ummul Quro, SMA Santa Lourensia, SMA Kharisma Bangsa, SMA Xaverius 1 Jambi, SMAN 2 South Tangerang City, SMAN 2 Cianjur, SMA of Excellent Boarding School Al Bayan, SMA Pribadi Bandung, and SMAN 1 Depok.

“In addition of receiving coaching scholarship, gifts and shopping vouchers, the first winner from each competition will receive an IPB entrance ticket without test,” said Rector.

There are four main activities were held during the festival event, those are competition, teacher training seminar, student talkshow, and motivational training.

As for subjects were competed are junior statistics, interactive meteorology, biology quick answer contest, chemistry challenge, mathematics with fun, computer problem solving competition, physics competition, popular scientific paper competition and STEM young researcher awards.

Contestants competed over President’s trophy, Ministry of Education and Culture’s trophy, trophy of Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti) also trophy of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG).

“This activity is an event to explore potency also to improve motivation and to share inspiration especially in mastery of science, engineering, design, and mathematics,” conveyed Dr. Ir. Sri Nurdiati, Dean of FMIPA IPB.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ir. Lukman Shalahudin, M.Sc., Head of Research and Regional Development Agency West Java in his welcoming speech said that a generation that has extra skills especially high mathematics skill and qualified provision of science will be the main driving force for the nation’s advancement.

“Currently West Java Province strives in growing the culture of innovating on every level of community, facilitating intellectual property, coaching and appreciation to innovations produced by community. Since science is the key of a nation’s advancement. Therefore, we need to get together to make science as the pivot of national development,” expressed Lukman. (qa)
