This is a wood glue from the bone of a catfish by a student of IPB

Catfish is one of the most popular fish by Indonesian people to be consumed. Although much in demand by the community, it turns out that catfish waste has not been utilized optimally, especially the bone fish of catfish waste.
Starting from that, three students of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) succeeded in creating a new innovation in the form of wood adhesive made from environmentally friendly catfish waste. The three students are Rizka Agustria Hasanah, Bagus Aditya Riyadi, and Mishbahul Khoiron Gumelar.
With the guidance of Dr. Ir. Jajang Suryana, M.Sc., the three students managed to make wood glue from bone fish waste. Catfish bones that used to make this glue are skull, spine, and tail bone.
"We use catfish bones as a wooden adhesive to replace the petroleum-based adhesives," said Mishbah.
Mishbah assesses the use of catfish bone as an adhesive material can reduce environmental pollution and can reduce household waste. In addition to environmentally friendly, waste catfish bones are also quite a lot and available every day.
How to make wood glue from fish bone waste catfish is very easy. Catfish bone cleaned from the remnants of dirt that stick, then boiled using water until softened. The decoction is then filtered using a filter. The filtered bone is smoothed using a blender until it is completely smooth. Once smoothed, the material further thickened until it is ready to use.
"We do not add chemical additives or other ingredients so we can say this wood glue is really environmentally friendly," added Mishbah.
The quality of glue from the waste of catfish bones was not inferior to the quality of wood glue on the market. The trials that have been done are sticking pine and sawdust. From the test results found that the level of adhesiveness of wood glue made from the bone of the catfish was the same as the wood glue on the market, even more, adhesive than the super brand super glue.
"The resulting color was more in line with the color of the wood. The resulting color is a gray color so it is not too contrast with the color of wood, "he added.
This work of innovation is selected in the Student Creativity Program (PKM) in 2018. Through this program, Mishbah and his friend's hope, wood glue from bone waste catfish can be utilized by wood craftsmen because it is easy to get and more economical. (RYS)
