IPB Students Cultivates Fast-Harvest Carp

Carp Fish (Ospronemus gouramy) is one of the favored freshwater fish as a consuming fish in Southeast Asia and South Asia. Delicious flavor from its solid meat makes carp as one of the main dishes in various places to eat or restaurant in Indonesia. Not only has the taste, carp also contained high nutrients. This makes carp fish as a fish that has high economic value. That makes carp have high demand in consumer, so in order to fulfill that it needs better cultivation. Departing from the same area which is Tasikmalaya, Bagja Sanjaya, Yurid Kushendarsyah, and Fahrudin Ahmad, students of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) interested to become a businessman in the field of aquaculture. This team conducts research as outlined in the Student Creativity Program in the field of Research Eksakta (PKM PE) under the guidance of Dr. Ir. Agus Oman Sudrajat, M.Sc. The title of his research is "The Influence of 17a-Methyl Testosterone and Glutamic Acid on Male Sex Changes to Increase Productivity of Carp Seeds (Ospronemus gouramy)."
One of the obstacles in carp is its growth rate. Between male fish and females the growth is not the same. Male carp fish grow faster than female fish. This suggests that male carp fish can be harvested faster than the female fish.
"Carp breeding time can reach 1.5-2 years while the male Carp fish can be harvested 6 months-1.5 years," said one of the team member, Fahrudin Ahmad.
The problem can be solved by giving the hormone 17a-methyl testoterone in carp to direct the formation of male sex. Male fish carp grows faster so that the target of cultivation. After that, the fish that has grown into the male is fed a diet enriched with glutamic acid to increase appetite. Thus, the growth of fish becomes faster and also harvested. This study aims to increase the productivity of Carp seeds. In addition, the growth of carp can be accelerated so that it can provide multiple benefits in the aquaculture business.
They hope the effects of this research can be multiplied. Prior to the differentiated breeds of the carp, a 17-a-methyl testosterone hormone was administered to carp. This is done to achieve the formation of female gonads is inhibited so that the next developing testicle. So all the seeds are male.
"Our greatest hope is to develop this carp business in Tasikmalaya. We will observe the fish gonads that have been treated. Hope all changed to manly. In addition, we can also determine which dosage is appropriate to increase the appetite of carp. So the alternative of carp breeding that we developed can be applied in the cultivation business, "hoped the Team Leader, Bagja Sanjaya (jhn)
