Professor of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Prof. Dr. Ietje Wientarsih, stated that the role of Veterinary Pharmacist is as  important as regular pharmacists for human medicine, which is to avoid the drug abuse for cattle that can be bad for humans. He cited the inappropriate use of antibiotics, causing drug resistance and residues in livestock products.

The Professor who was born in Bandung on 1953 explained that veterinary pharmacies, sometimes called animal pharmacies, may fall in the category of hospital pharmacy, retail pharmacy or mail-order pharmacy. Veterinary pharmacies stock different varieties and different strengths of medications to fulfill the pharmaceutical needs of animals. Because the needs of animals, as well as the regulations on veterinary medicine, are often very different from those related to people, veterinary pharmacy is often kept separate from regular pharmacies. veterinary pharmacy is a wedge between the disciplines of pharmacy and veterinary science. Pharmaceutical science includes knowledge of identification, segregation, pharmacological action, drug combinations, analysis, standardization and compounding and dispensing medications, and medicine preparations. Pharmacy is broadly divided into two fields of science, namely industrial pharmacy and clinical pharmacy. So it is with veterinary pharmacy.

She said, pharmacists have an important role in Animal Hospital (RSH), both as individuals and as members of the team Pharmacy and Therapy Committee. The process of drug management in RSH may have different processes, for example in the process of drug selection. Pharmacists can provide information to animal owners in their own Medical Treatment (UPDS) activities, for example the choice of analgesic-antipyretics in cats. Cats do not have glucoronyl transferase enzymes that play a role in the metabolism of paracetamol. This causes the cat can’t perform the metabolism of paracetamol well and lead to poisoning and even death. The use of ivermectin in collie dogs should be avoided, as the dog is so sensitive that it can cause anaphylactic shock.

"The problem here is that there are not many veterinary medicines, most of which are still used by human medicines, but the dosage is of course different from that of humans. So it is more difficult here, that all drugs can’t be given to all animals. Because the needs of animals, as well as the regulations on veterinary medicine, are often very different from those related to people, veterinary pharmacy is often kept separate from regular pharmacies. While in humans can be given, we must think only difference of age, old, young, and child. There is no difference in gender. As for animals, many differentiate, like a race there is a cat or dog, it's different medicine, "he said.

He said the pharmacy's job here is to provide students with knowledge about medicines. Veterinary pharmacists dispense drugs intended for animal use and provide information to clients with regard to dosage and safety concerns. "Why veterinary pharmacy must be passed on to students, as later on when they are graduated and work as veterinarians and they are assigned to work in remote area far from the pharmacy, they can mix themselves. For veterinarians they are allowed for compounding and dispensing medications their own medicine, but such methods could not be applied for human medicine , "he said. (Wied)
