FKH IPB Organized Training Course for Laboratories Practitioners of Various Institution

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Bogor Agricultural University (FKH IPB) organized Biosafety and Biosecurity Training for BSL-3 Laboratory. The Training Course was the joint cooperation program between  FKH IPB, and Indonesian Bioresiko Association (ABI) which refers to Indonesian National Standard (SNI). The event was carried out in  IPB International Convention Center (IICC), Bogor, on Wednesday, 9 August 2017.

The participants of TC consisted of staff members of FKH IPB, Primate Animal Studies Center, students of the graduate studies program (S2 and S3), as well as representatives of Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA). Also present in the training course among others partners of education program of FKH IPB, such as Agriculture Quarantine Agency, Quality Testing Center and Animal Product Certification, Quality Testing Center and Certification of Veterinary Drugs, and representatives of  Biological Center of LIPI.

Vice Dean for Resources, Cooperation and Development of FKH IPB, Dr. Drh. Trioso Purnawarman, said that participants of the training course will learn BSL-3 management biosafety and biosecurity management, covering the operational standard, up to laboratory waste management which often cause fear the occurrence of toxic disasters in their neighbourhoods.  It is the general public is very sensitive about.

Biological Safety Levels (BSL) are a series of protections relegated to autoclave-related activities that take place in particular biological labs. They are individual safeguards designed to protect laboratory personnel, as well as the surrounding environment and community. BSL-3 laboratory typically includes work on microbes that are either indigenous or exotic, and can cause serious or potentially lethal disease through inhalation. BSL-3 [=high containment] laboratories working areas to tackle biosafety issues involved in handling highly infectious disease agents required for basic research and diagnosis. Thus, a safety-conscious staff, well informed about the recognition and control of laboratory hazards, is key to the prevention of laboratory acquired infections, incidents and accidents. For this reason, continuous in-service training in safety measures is essential.

This training is the 6th of its kind. The first training course was on basic knowledge, how to collect animals before they were  brought to the laboratory, then isolate the virus, how to run the Next Generation Sequence (NGS) tool which is the mainstay of FKH IPB. In addition, the training of trainer (ToT) to train trainers to carry out activities at BSL-3. It was also to provide understanding of each person, especially who will use the laboratory, must do the training first.

The training includes Principle of Laboratory of Biosafety and Biosecurity, Risk Assessment, Biosafety Cabinet, Decontamination and Waste Management, Infectious Substance Transport, Emergency Response, BSL-3 Practices.

Previously, under the joint cooperation program between FKH IPB with JICA and three universities of Japan, namely Yamaguchi University, Tokyo University and Nagoya University, the cooperation had granted  BSL-3 laboratory equipment for FKH IPB. (Wied)
