Professor of IPB: Maintaining the Family Resilience by Understanding the Meaning of Family
The role of the family was very important in shaping the individual. The public awareness of the importance of the role of the family was felt in various areas. For example, Governor of Lampung in order to welcome the National Family Day (HARGANAS) which fell on 15 July re-arranged the Way Kambas National Park, Lampung. So that on 15 July, the residents around the City of Lampung and other tourists could celebrate their moments with the family while enjoying the national park tour.
It was clear that the role of the family was very concerned for the formation of the family resilience in Indonesia. Professor of Department of Family and Consumer Science, Faculty of Human Ecology, Bogor Agricultural University (FEMA-IPB), Prof.Dr.Ir. Euis Sunarti, M.Si, explained that the family resilience in a community needed to be explained and should be the main focus of the government in establishing a country’s human development policy.
“Understanding the role of the family in shaping an individual is very important. Other than that, it can be an antidote towards the bad influences that can not only disrupt the individual, but it may also extend its impact when dealing with other communities,” she explained.
Not just appealing, Prof. Euis also took part in donating a work in form of the prototype of a learning instrument of the family. The tool was a book-shaped card like a greeting card. When opened, so it would appear a house form equipped with the writings about the meaning of the family.
On the card, it was explained about the growth stage of a person starting from the individual himself to form a family that was likened to a house. It was also explained in general the role of each family in realizing the family resilience which consisted of the physical endurance of economy, the social, and the psychological. So that, each individual family was able to know the respective roles and tasks, which in the end each individual family could run the job in earning a living without sacrificing the family interests.
The book-shaped card had been used the Agency of National Population and Family Planning as one of the main menu in the counseling about the importance of the family resilience in the fight against the current of globalization that each year strengthened.
“Yesterday’s experimental result by using this book shows nearly 80 percent of one’s knowledge of the meaning, the individual role and duties of a family can increase, when the pretest and the post test are done,” she explained.
In commemorating the 24th HARGANAS, Prof. Euis also had produced various books about the family. Prof. Euis hoped that the role of understanding and the individual task in a family could be increasingly noticed by the community and the government of Indonesia, so that the family resilience could be realized.
