IPB Researcher Improved Harapan cultivars Soybean into Tolerant to Drought with High Yield Potential
Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) is one of the most important food commodities in Indonesia and a source of vegetable protein. The development of food and feed industries made from soybeans resulted in increasing demand for soybeans in Indonesia. The increase in domestic soybean consumption will increase soybean imports because domestic soybean production has not been able to meet the community's need for soybeans. Efforts to increase soybean production both in terms of quality and quantity are still carried on by the government.
One of the most important strategies that can be used for increased production of soybean yield is utilizing high yielding soybean varieties that have high yielding, adaptable, disease resistance and stable genotypes for the region. Selection of varieties has an important role in soybean cultivation. Plant breeding plays an important role in producing superior varieties. Until now we have obtained the next cultivars generation of soybeans as result of crossing, mutation and genetic transformation.
Students of the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture of Bogor Agricultural University (FAPERTA IPB), Jordan Christoper Panggabean, supervised by Dr. Desta Wirnas and Dr. Trikoesoemaningtyas investigated the " Potensi Hasil Galur-Galur Harapan Kedelai IPB (Glycine max (L.) Merril) di Lahan Kering = the Potential of IPB Harapan cultivars Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merril) on Dryland". The research project was implemented from June to September 2015, at Tegineneng Experimental Garden, Lampung AIAT, South Lampung. The experimental design used was a complete randomized block design with three replicates and 16 Harapan cultivars and three varieties for comparison, namely Anjasmoro, Argomulyo, and Wilis.
The results obtained showed that the expected cultivars tested influenced the percentage character of pod content. The tested Harapan cultivar have no effect on the character of seed weight per plant, the weight of the tile seeds, the productivity, and the number of empty voids. Based on the results of this study, the Harapan cultivar with the best potential yields for cultivation on dry land are CG-22-10, PG-57-1, SC-21-5, and SP-30-4 cultivars that have the same or better productivity than Wilis varieties as a varietal comparator with a productivity of 1.83 tons ha.
