Seaweed Based Pomade Produced by IPB Students Will Nurse Your Hair Back to Health

Hair is among the biggest assets in regards of beauty that a human posses. All of us are concerned about the look of our hair. The synthetic hair care products, such as pomade, are being used by huge number of young people neglecting the fact that they contains ingredients which are dangerous to the growth and beauty of our hair. Baldness and premature hair graying and hair loss are just few examples of consequences you can face by using hair oil which are made of synthetic chemicals. It is the reasons why some teenagers have gray hair today.

As we understand that Indonesia is the world’s largest producer of seaweed, but it has not been utilized and processed for further products. Seaweeds contain high fatty acids, especially linoleic, EPA, DHA, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that can strengthen hair. Seaweed also contains amino acids that can help regenerate every strand of hair quickly so as to prevent hair loss. All varieties of seaweed contain essential amino acid, minerals, and vitamins that help address such common causes of hair thinning and balding. Moreover,  seaweed helps give hair its tensile strength so that it does not break off at the root.  Components and bioactive of seaweed rich in antioxidants that protect the hair and keep the hair pigment well. The seaweed business is promising as the price is about Rp10 to Rp12 thousand per kilogram, however further process is really required to added value products.

Seeing the potential in seaweed and feeling fearful and increasingly worried on the condition of today's young hair,  Nila Nurhidayah, student of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) was thinking of making seaweed-based Pomade, Poris. Nila with her team who are members of Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa bidang Penelitian (PKM-P Student Creativity Program for Research)  adds tropical fruits fragrance for their product. Members of her team are: Muhammad Rizkiawan Pratama, RM Muhammad Nur Fauzan, Panji Saputra and Fatimatus Zuhro.

Industry continues to return to natural products as a source of novelty.  Tropical Herbs and seaweeds is rich in the mineral iron that helps the blood nourish hair follicles and keep them healthy.

This seaweed based pomade helps prevent dandruff. The manufacturing process of this pomade takes place in the Laboratory of IPB, Dramaga campus, Bogor. The package of Poris's product uses bio-degradable plastic as an initial wrap, and the final wrap package is  recycled paper bag. Eco-friendly packaging is the main attraction of this product. Poris, the seaweed based pomade is available in the market, the price per pack (80 grams) is Rp 50 thousand.

Poris seaweed based pomade with tropical fruit fragrance stops hair loss and regrows hair, because it is full of immune-boosting micronutrients that help reduce hair loss due to scalp inflammation. "Indonesian people, especially the younger generation look stylish and fresh, because this product will increase melanin production that help restore natural hair color and vitality. In addition, seaweed will have high economic value if it is developed further into the hair care products, "said Nila.

Nila and her team have been promoting their product across multiple social media channels, such as facebook, twitter, bazaar activities, and print media and electronic media as well. "To expand the marketing area, we use the Internet as a marketing medium as it allows the targeted prospects or customers," said Nila. (Wied)
