“Balambul”, Wooden Sleepers Creted by Students of IPB
Inspired by the government's program on the development or manufacture of Mass public transport system in areas other than Java and Mass Rapid Transport System – Jakarta, a group of students of the Faculty of Forestry of Bogor Agricultural University (FAHUTAN IPB) were motivated to innovate in making railway sleepers. They are members of Kelompok Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa bidang Karsa Cipta (PKM-KC Student Creativity Program for Karsa Cipta (PKM-KC), who had successfully created 'Balambul'. The group consisted of Adi Supriyanto, Muhamad Iqbal Maulana, Maeda Wahyuningrum and Ubaydillah Ramadhan. "Balambul 'is an acronym for the Application of Superior Bamboo Lamination for Railway Wooden Sleepers.
Generally, wooden railway sleepers are made of intact pieces of wood with high density and high resistance of wood destroyers (e.g. termites and weather), for example ulin (Eusideroxylon zwageri). But students of the Forest Products Department of Bogor Agricultural University (FAHUTAN IPB) utilized low density and low resistance wood such as sengon wood for railway sleepers.
The group utilized fast-growing sengon laut (Paraserienthes falcataria (L) Nielsen) combined with bamboo andong (Gigantochloa verticillata (Wild) Munro), and epoxy glue for railway sleepers.
The utilization of sengon laut was based on the the rampant cultivation of sengon in Indonesia, and the scarcity of ulin in Indonesia. In addition, the support of the development program of Indonesia's High Plantation Forest that cultivate mainly sengon. This species is selected for mass cultivation as sengon is a fast growing tree species (3-5 years) with many merits while adaptable to any environments thus qualified for cultivating. Total log production in Indonesia amounted to 34.32 million cubic meters, 55.22 percent (18.95 million cubic meters) out of which were from Industrial Plantation Forest, while the other 11.07 percent (3.80 million cubic meters) were produced by community forests and the Plantation Foressts (Ministry of Forestry 2010).
Compared to ulin species, sengon much less durable and strength. Therefore they must be supported by andong bamboo. Combining sengon wood and bamboo andong will strengthen the railway sleepers. The raw materials for the laminated sleepers 'Balambul' are supplied by companies in Sukabumi. "We look forward to join the cooperative work with timber entrepreneurs from Sukabumi that assisted us in the process of making 'Balambul'," said Adi. Adi expected that railway sleepers they created will pass its test, so they will be recommended for acceptance by the government. (Wied)
