A Group of Students Created "2 in 1 diapers” Which is Convertible into Fertilizers
Environmental pollution is a popular issue after World War II. It can be said that pollution is the result of our social development through the means of science. Pollution is the product of our scientific achievements being applied for the improvement of human facilities. One such havoc caused by the social development of the human society is pollution. The most dominant toxic waste and toxic materials in Indonesia come from household waste. Domestic garbage is the dominant of baby diapers. Disposable diapers are a popular consumer product lately. Although they offer convenience, they do have several dangerous environmental drawbacks. Not only do disposable diapers account for a lot of the trash taking over the nation’s landfills, but they also pose serious risks to the environment and people alike. Used baby diapers contain faecal material or disease sources they potentially harmful to our water quality. In addition, plastic waste or used baby diapers cause major environmental problem that must be addressed as they require long time to decompose. A primary objective of waste management today is to protect the public and the environment from potentially harmful effects.
To respond such pollution problem caused by disposal diapers, a group of students of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) have attempted to innovate environmentally friendly product, they created "2 in 1 diapers” (from Popok to Pupuk). "2 in 1 diapers” are economically and environmentally safe diapers for babies. They made such innovation under the Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa (PKM-P Student Creativity Program).
The group consisted of Sekar Ilmia Tiarani, Sri Ilmiati, Siti Nuratiah Hafsah KA, Arih Amirah Sari, and Sofya Azizah. According Sekar, this diaper they created is the one that re-useable repeatedly. She also explained that the materials used are derived from biodegradable materials, and will help in contributing towards the environment in the form of reducing plastic pollution.
"We are trying to create environmentally friendly products and reduce diaper waste and it is affordable diaper," he said. In addition to be baby diapers, waste of "2 in 1 diapers” can be converted into fertilizer, which rich in organic matter such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
"Feces really are resources, not waste. Broadly speaking, there are three faecal processing techniques that yield more or less the same result. First, the drying process of the feces, to separate urine within it (as a liquid fertilizer). The dried feces will be stored for 6 months. Second, the composting of feces and urine, then they will be stored 6-8 months in the shelter. During which household waste will be added. And third, composting with soil. Feces and urine are stored in shelters for 3-4 months. After the process is completed, usually the pathogen of the feces is dead and fertilizers are ready for use, "he explained.
They expected that environmental friendly diaper they created will be marketable and socialized, as it follow the regulations in reducing waste diapers. In the future, the group expected that the composition of diapers they created will obtain patents. Finally, they expected that their product will pass the Indonesian National Standard Body (BNSI) test or will be accepted for article in both national or international journals or seminar proceedings.
