National Contest of Bekisar Chicken 2015 held at Baranangsiang Campus of Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), Bogor, Sunday (15/11) is the first contest in IPB as a result of  the collaboration between Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) of IPB and Bekisar Chicken Lover Group of Indonesia (Kemari). Hundreds of contest participants came from Bali, Madura, East Java, Central Java and West Java.

"Bekisar Chicken is categorized as voice chicken. It is the result of a cross between a male green jungle fowl and local Indonesian chicken, especially kampong chicken. It is originally from Sumenep, Madura. Among other voice chickens, such as Pelung chicken of Cianjur Regency, West Java, laughter chicken of Sidrap Regency, South Sulawesi, Kukuak Balenggek chicken of Solok Regency, West Sumatra, and Gaok chicken of Madura, only Bekisar chicken has not been registered as an Indonesian native chicken germplasm. Other voice chickens have already got recognition or get a decree certificate from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia," said Maria Ulfa, S.Pt, M.Si, lecturer of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, who is also Chairman of the Committee.

According to her, this activity was initiated for the registration of Bekisar as Indonesian native chicken germplasm. In this contest what are assessed are the health and appearance of the Bekisar. Unsurprisingly, the winner chicken will increase its selling price.

"This contest is to win the rolling  Cup of IPB Rector and the Directorate General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health, Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture. Next year IPB will initiate a chicken congress and voice chicken contest, but at the world level," she said. (Mtd)
