IPB and Mimika Regency of Papua, Signed the MoU on Sago Development
In the framework of developing sago commodity in Papua, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Bogor Agricultural University (Fateta – IPB) organized the Workshop on Business Plan Development for Sago Commodities of Papua and West Papua Province, on Monday, 2 December 2013, at the Mahogany Meeting Room, School of Business and Management Campus, Bogor Agricultural University, Bogor.
Dean Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Bogor Agricultural University, Dr. Sam Herodian, expressed that sago palm development in Papua should have been formulated already. "While the development of the sago model will be implemented in South Sorong, the marketing methods for this commodity must also be prepared, "said Dr. Sam.
The Head of Livestock, Agriculture, Food Crops and Plantation Services of Mimika, John Wicklif Tegai, who attended the special occasion stated that sago is natural commodity, the plant does not require special attention to grow. He strongly agrees for the acceleration program of sago development in the Papua. However, it should be the national agenda for the whole country. "With regard to the constraints encounter, we should be able to ensure to the decision maker that we will be able to solve them. The government must be able to start, and allocate funds in the National Budget. Likewise, the provincial governments should allocate development funds in its provincial budget, "he said.
Most importantly of all is education. School children in this area have to learn the Papuan sago well. "Education is a shared responsibility. Especially IPB, as the agricultural educational institution, it has a moral responsibility to socialize sago together. Another important issues are the dissemination information and publication. The planned socialization should not only be attended the regents and the governor, but also by the mass media. The advantages and benefits of sago should be understood by all members of the community, thus it will enable the government to plan the sago development policy, "he said.
With regard to educational program. Dr.. Hashim Bintoro, Chairman of the Special Program on Integrated Agricultural Production and Development, pledged that the Directorate of Diploma Program of IPB is ready to send its students to have their field works in Papua. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IPB with South Sorong authority, had concluded the workshop. Both Prof. Anas M. Fauzi, Vice Chancellor for Research and Cooperation of IPB, on behalf of IPB and Drs. Otto Ihalauw, MA, Head Bapeda of South Sorong, on behalf of the Regent of South Sorong, signed the MoU. (Wied).
