Again, IPB Hosts Symposium on Curcuma

Three street female vendors selling herbal medicines from the Sub-district of Panaragan, District of Central Bogor together entered the ballroom of IPB International Convention Center (IICC), while offering their merchandise verbally "Jamu-jamu! (Herbal medicines) …  Strong Herbal Medicines, Sir.  Health Medicines, Madam…".

And so, Rector of IPB Prof. Dr. Herry Suhardiyanto and a number of officers within the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Welfare the Republic of Indonesia, Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture made an order for the strong herbal medicines, which were directly drunk at the venue.

The presence of these herbal medicine women enlivened "Globalization of Indonesian Jamu Brand: The 2nd International Symposium on Curcuma, the 40th Meeting of the National Working Group on Indonesian Medicinal Plant ". This event was organized by the Center for Biofarmaka Studies of IPB in cooperation with the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Welfare, Coordinating Ministry for Economy, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, BPOM, Herbal Medical Doctor Association of Indonesia (PDHMI), National Working Group of Indonesian Medicinal Plants (POKJANAS TOI), Municipality Government of Bogor, Medicinal Herb Entrepreneur Association (GP), and PT SOHO.

The series of activities, starting from May 24 and ended on May 29, 2011, include the 2nd International Symposium on Wild Ginger, National Seminar on Indonesian Medicinal Plants, Workshop on Quality Assurance, Natural Therapy Workshop, Business Meeting and Exhibition of Research Results, Medicinal Herb Festival, Batik Design Competition with the theme on herbs, and Formula Competition on ‘Welcome Drink’ of Wild Ginger. This event involved 579 participants from various institutions, 48 oral presentations, 128 poster presentations, 71 workshop participants, 14 guest speakers from Japan, Hungary, India, Malaysia, Netherlands, China, Pakistan and Malaysia.

"The mission is carried on this activity is to provide information on scientific and technological diversity of medicinal plants, open a herbal medicine market  and support the success of program on the scientific processing of medicinal herbs so that globalization of Indonesian medicinal herbs will come true," said Head of the Center for Biomedical Studies,  LPPM IPB, Prof.Dr. Latifah K Darusman.

Meanwhile, the Rector of IPB said, the icon of turmeric (curcuma xanthorrhiza) as "Ginseng of Indonesia" is right to echo again because of its various efficacies in maintaining health. On this occasion, he was asked to launch the Roadmap and Database of Medicinal Herbs.
Present on this occasion were among others, Deputy III for Population, Health, Environment in the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Welfare, Dr. Emil Agustiono, Expertise Staff in the Division of Health Technology and Globalization of the Health Ministry Dr. Agus Purwadianto, Head of Research and Development Agency of Agriculture Ministry, Dr. Haryono. Each of them presented his ideas on this activity.

Since the launch of Herbal Medicines of Indonesian Brand on March 4, 2008, or for the past two years a lot of efforts have been made as follow-ups. For example, the strengthening of herbal medicines from the scientific and technological views through scientific processes (Scientification) of herbal medicines proclaimed in Kendal on January 6, 2010.

Scientification of herbal medicines is the effort and the scientific justification of herbal medicines through services -based researches. The goal is to provide a scientific basis or evidence for the empirical use of herbal medicines through health care researches because doctors and the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) have a very strong commitment together with scientists / academicians to raising herbal medicines as an icon of health with the people. With the support of science and technology, and the empirical evidence, herbal medicine is expected to grow not only in Indonesia, but also recognized by the international community. (Mtd)
