News

By the end of this year, UKM (Student Activity Unit) Max IPB in collaboration with the Erasmus Huis staged a jazz music concert by Yuri Honing Quartet from the windmill country, the Dutch, in Building Andi Hakim Nasoetion (9 / 11), Darmaga Campus of IPB, Bogor.

This group consists of Yuri Honing (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone), Wolfert Brederode (piano), Frans van der Hoeven (double bass), and Joost Lijbaart (drums).

Yuri Honing is a leading sax blower in the Netherlands. His experience in concert tour has reached more than 50 countries, with discography approaching 30 titles. He plays music and makes recordings with great jazz musicians such as Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, and Paul Bley.

Currently, in Indonesia they have conducted tours to several cities, namely, Surabaya, Semarang, Jogjakarta, Jakarta, and the last at IPB, Bogor.

In 2001 Yuri received Edison Jazz Award (Dutch Grammy, a sort of Dutch version of the Grammy trophies) for the recording entitled "Seven", also featuring Paul Bley, Gary Peacock and Paul Motion.

After almost 10 years without involving the piano, Yuri Honing is now playing music with the famous jazz pianist, a musician of the ECM recording label, Wolfert Brederode.
In this quartet they managed to hypnotize IPB students mostly dressed in batik.

The beats of Josst’s hands and feet, the high-pitch sound of Yuri’s saxophone and gentle sound of Wolfert’s piano immersed spectators who crowded the auditorium.

Some instrumental music presented by Yuri and his friends might seem less familiar to the Indonesian ears, such song titles as  Sweet Surrender, All I Need, Song For the UK and traditional Armenian songs.

But that did not prevent spectators from enjoying the Jazz music played by Yuri and friends, which was expressive, nice, compact, serious, and entertaining.

Also present at the concert was Head of Sub Directorate of Student Interests and Talents, Ir. Bambang Riyanto, S.Pi., M.Sc. (mtd)
