IPB University is the only university in Indonesia that is ranked in the top 50 in the world based on the QS World University Rankings (QS WUR) by Subject.

Rector of IPB University, Prof Arif Satria, said that this achievement is proof that the academic and research reputation of IPB University is increasingly recognized globally. This was revealed in the event of Appreciation of Top 500 QS WUR by Subject Achievement Universities in Jakarta (20/3).

“Nobody likes ranking, but everybody checks the ranking,” said Prof Arif quoting a saying that describes the importance of ranking in the academic world. He revealed that although many criticize the ranking system, in reality all parties still pay attention to it.

Prof Arif explained that university reputation is not only built from rankings, but also from academic performance, accreditation systems, and certifications that guarantee the quality of learning.

“There are five important aspects in building reputation, namely stakeholder engagement, research communications, brand campaigns, crisis communications, and rankings strategies,” he said.

In the QS WUR ranking, IPB University is ranked 49th in the world, 10th in Asia, and first in Southeast Asia (ASEAN) in agriculture and forestry.

“We have maintained this position for five consecutive years. In Asia, the dominance of Chinese universities is increasingly visible, but IPB University remains in the top 10 with Kyoto University, The University of Tokyo, and Seoul National University,” said Prof Arif.

Prof Arif also revealed that international publications are one of the main factors in this ranking.

“When compared to universities in Tokyo and Seoul, the number of international publications of IPB University is still higher. This proves that we are not inferior in producing high-quality research,” he added.

Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Prof Brian Yuliarto, expressed his appreciation for the achievements of Indonesian universities included in the 500 subjects of the QS World University Rankings (QS WUR).

“This is an extraordinary achievement from the best campuses representing Indonesia. We believe this is the result of collective work involving all academicians in the country,” said Prof Brian.

On that occasion, he also highlighted the trend of university rankings in Asia, where the dominance of Chinese universities is increasingly visible.

“China currently dominates in agriculture and various other subjects. However, Indonesia has shown significant achievements, such as IPB University which is included in the top 10 in Asia in the fields of agriculture and forestry,” he said.

Prof Brian also revealed that Indonesian universities are now increasingly aligned with world universities.

“Our campuses and their lecturers have the same great quality as foreign universities. Therefore, the ministry continues to encourage the use of doctoral scholarships (S3) as proof that the quality of our education has been recognized globally,” he said.

Prof Brian hopes this achievement will motivate all universities to continue improving the quality of education and research. “We must continue to collaborate to increase the involvement of other campuses to be able to compete in the global arena,” he said. (dr) (IAAS/KDP)
