Prof Yeni Herdiyani, Chairperson of IPB University’s Artificial Intelligence Study Program explains when is the right and safe time to use ChatGPT. In the AI for Education Kick Off event, Prof Yeni said ChatGPT is safe to use for things that do not require correct or factual answers.

“If the truth of the information is critical, the user must have the expertise to verify the answers provided or be willing to take responsibility for the consequences. Under these conditions, ChatGPT can be used safely,” he explains. 

“However, if the user is unsure or unable to verify the truth of the answer, then the use of ChatGPT becomes unsafe,” she added. 

Prof Yeni also shared tips for making a good prompt in using ChatGPT. “First, provide a clear context to convey the background of the problem or situation. Second, provide the main direction or task and include key questions to break down the problem into specific parts,” she said.

Third, continued Prof Yeni, set limits to narrow the scope of the discussion to keep it relevant. Fourth, explain the main objectives as a guide. Finally, determine the format of the answer to direct the response to be structured according to user needs.

Kick Off Al for Education is an activity initiated by the Directorate of Learning Transformation and Educational Technology (DTPTP) IPB University for lecturers and students. This activity was carried out in order to realize the transformation of education through Artificial Intelligence (AI).

On that occasion, Prof Deni Noviana, Vice Rector of IPB University for Education and Student Affairs said, the purpose of the Al for Education Kick Off was to raise awareness for lecturers and students about the use of AI in education.

“This kick off also aims to inform the positive value of Generative AI (GenAI) and how to avoid its negative impact and provide examples of ethical and responsible GenAI utilization in supporting the learning process at IPB University,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rector of IPB University, Prof Arif Satria explained IPB University’s readiness to use AI. He said, currently IPB University has formed a task force team for the preparation of guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in the implementation of the tridarma of higher education in the IPB environment.

“The curriculum needs to evolve so that students can be prepared to work side by side with AI, while still developing human skills such as critical thinking, creative problem solving, and communication,” said Prof Arif.

In the material presentation session, Prof Yulin Lestari as Director of DTPTP IPB University explained about “AI for Learning in Higher Education”. “GenAI is an artificial intelligence that can create new content. From the perspective of lecturers, AI must be able to enrich learning with AI technology,” she explained.

Prof Yulin continued, from the perspective of students, GenAI is used to understand difficult material, provide writing ideas, produce learning practice materials, find references and reading sources. (Lp) (IAAS/RUM)
