The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy (Menparekraf) of the Republic of Indonesia, Sandiaga Uno said that the Gebyar Nusantara (Genus) event at IPB University is a pillar of cultural preservation in the modern era. He said that in a video tapping of the 2024 Genus Peak Night at Graha Widya Wisuda (GWW), IPB Dramaga Campus (29/9).

He emphasised that cultural diversity in Indonesia is a wealth that must be maintained. “Indonesia’s diverse culture, including ethnicity, language, art, and tourist attractions, creates an amazing cultural wealth, although there are challenges in managing cultural heritage harmoniously,” he said.

Sandiaga continued, the enthusiasm of the young generation in preserving art and culture is one of the important pillars in the development of tourism and creative economy.

He assessed that efforts to preserve and recognise cultural diversity are very important so that cultural heritage remains alive and develops in modern society.

“With the right spirit and initiative, it is hoped that the young generation of IPB University can ensure that the archipelago’s cultural heritage remains alive and relevant in the midst of changing times,” he said.

The Rector of IPB University, Prof Arif Satria said that from the work and ideas of Fritjof Capra shows the importance of learning from nature in building culture and the human way of life.

“Nature has three main characteristics that can be used as a lesson. First, diversity which shows how important it is to appreciate various forms of life,” he explained.

Second, he continued, a network (networking) that describes the relationship between living things. Third, interdependence which reminds of the close relationship between humans and nature.

“A strong culture is born from natural diversity, and the higher the level of diversity, the stronger our resilience. On the contrary, homogeneity or uniformity can make us vulnerable to various challenges,” said Prof Arif.

Prof Arif added, socio-cultural diversity is the power and potential to ensure survival. Therefore, he emphasised, it is important for students to understand and delve into the meaning of Genus as a place to appreciate diversity.

“Learning from nature means delving into the process of life and appreciating differences as an integral part of learning. Thus, we can build a harmonious and sustainable culture,” he said. (dr/Rz) (IAAS/TIA)
