Becoming a Professional Engineer, PPI SPs IPB University Holds Studium Generale
The Professional Engineer Program (PPI) study program of the Graduate School (SPs) of IPB University held another Studium Generale on Professionalism in the Field of Animal Sciences on 27/4.
The activity was held online by presenting guest speaker Dr Ir Edi Suryanto from the Livestock Vocational Board of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) and was attended by the Secretary of the PPI Study Program, Deasy Kartika Rahayu Kuncoro, ST, MT, lecturers of the PPI study program professionalism course Prof Dewi Apri Astuti, Dr. Yanuar J. Purwanto and students of the regular pathway and recognition of prior learning (RPL) of the PPI study program.
The activity was opened by Prof Dewi Apri Astuti, in her remarks she expressed her gratitude to the speakers who had attended and also the implementation of this public lecture activity.
“The purpose of this public lecture is to provide information on the importance of professionalism, especially in the field of animal s, in order to carry out their roles and duties as engineers. Hopefully this activity can provide insight and experience for PPI students,” she said.
Dr Yanuar J. Purwanto explained that engineer professionalism includes competent and proven (engineering work results), understanding the Professional Engineer Certification system (SSIP), holding an Engineer Registration Certificate (STRI), “These three things are the main components in engineer professionalism. Therefore, it is a common awareness to be able to contribute our professionalism,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Deasy Kartika Rahayu Kuncoro, ST, MT added, this public lecture is one of the compulsory courses of PPI study program at SPs IPB University. “This PPI study program is a higher education program after an undergraduate program to form engineering competencies organized by Universities (PT) in collaboration with the relevant ministries of PII and industry, after obtaining permission from the Minister,” said Deasy.
“The professional engineering degree is given by universities in collaboration with related ministries and PII and can be achieved through regular mechanisms and recognition of prior learning or RPL,” she said.
Dr Ir Edi Suryanto conveyed the tips that a professional must have, the first is skill, which is having expertise in their field. “The second is knowledge, which is mastering the science in their field and having insight into other sciences related to their field. The last is attitude, which must have ethics that are applied in their field,” he added.
Dr Ir Edi Suryanti added that a job is called a profession if it is a full-time vocation, has knowledge and skills or expertise, is a universal standard, “In addition, a job can be called a profession if it has devotion, diagnostic skills and applicative competence, is autonomous, has a code of ethics, clients, behaves as a servant and is responsible,” she added.
