Located at the IPB International Convention Center (IICC) Bogor, Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution and Empowerment (CARE) IPB University and Bayer held an International Workshop Science Exchange Program “Overview National And International Biosafety Regulation II” on Wednesday, 31/1.

This activity aims to build science communication between the Commission for Biosafety of Genetically Engineered Products (KKH PRG), Bayer and other stakeholders in the further development of knowledge about biotech crops, their safety and to prepare for the development of biotech crop cultivation in Indonesia.

Vice Rector of IPB University for Research, Innovation and Agromaritime Development, Prof Ernan Rustiadi, in his speech said that IPB University has long had concerns through education and research related to biosafety, including those developed in the faculties of agriculture and animal sciences, as well as those conducted by research centers under the International Research Institute of IPB University.

“IPB University seeks to contribute in facing the challenges of biosafety issues, including through the existence of the IPB University human and animal research ethics commission,” he said.

Dr Dahri Tanjung, as the organizing committee, said that this science exchange activity involved a number of scientists from within and outside the country such as Dr Andrews Roberts from the United States, Dr Danillo Fernandez from Paraguay, Dr Andres Frankow from Argentina and Dr Suichi Nakai from Japan, who discussed the topic of Transportability Data in each country.

“This science exchange event is expected to be a learning medium for various parties, especially the KKH PRG team related to the preparation of PRG product licensing regulations,” said Dr Dahri.

Prof Manuntun Parulian Hutagaol, one of the CARE IPB researchers who was also one of the moderators of the activity said, “The lessons learned from this event are not only an input for KKH PRG in the preparation of improving licensing services in Indonesia but also open up opportunities for cooperation with various parties in relation to joint research and joint resources in the process of applying for licensing service procedures,” he said.

“Thus, it is expected that PRG licensing regulations can be followed by companies with various business scales,” said Prof. Manuntun. (*/Lp) (IAAS/NAU)
