As an archipelagic country, Indonesia is currently pushing for a blue economy strategy to drive a sustainable economy. This strategy certainly requires superior human resources (HR) with good insight into aquatic resource management.

The Aquatic Resources Management Study Program (Prodi), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK), IPB University, is one of the right choices that can produce graduates with a variety of superior competencies according to these demands.

Students of IPB University’s Aquatic Resources Management Study Program learn about the development of aquatic resource management science (fresh, brackish, and marine) related to sustainability, conservation, aquatic ecosystems, and sustainable fisheries.

Interestingly, IPB University’s Aquatic Resources Management Study Program is the first and the best study program in Indonesia in the field of science and management of aquatic resources and the environment.

“This study program has been accredited A by the National Accreditation Board of Higher Education (BAN-PT) and has proud international accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering, Informatics, Natural Sciences, and Mathematics Study Programs (ASIIN),” said Chairman of the MSP Department, Prof. Hefni Effendi.

This ASIIN international accreditation further emphasizes the standards and quality of IPB University’s Aquatic Resources Management Study Program.

In this study program, students will be equipped with basic knowledge, technical skills, and managerial skills in various aspects. Including understanding aquatic ecosystems, bio-ecology, conservation, aquatic ecotourism, and resource management based on an ecosystem approach to water area management.

Graduates of IPB University’s Aquatic Resources Management Study Program can gain the knowledge and skills needed to solve the complex challenges facing aquatic ecosystems and resources in the 21st century.

Beyond the main competencies, students will also be equipped with entrepreneurship courses and soft skills to produce graduates who are professional and have entrepreneurial character. It is not surprising that many of the graduates have become successful entrepreneurs, such as Aang Permana, founder of PT Ikanovasi Daya Lokal, which is engaged in processing fishery products under the brand “Si Petek.”.

Another alumnus, Atika Ambar Wati, one of the best graduates of FPIK IPB University from SMA Negeri 1 Kroya, Cilacap, said that studying in the Aquatic Resource Management Study Program opened her horizons of knowledge in the field of fisheries and waters more broadly and deeply.

“The learning process is interesting, not just limited to the classroom. This made it easier for me to understand the courses taught. Practical activities in the laboratory and in the field provide an exciting and memorable learning experience,” said Atika, who currently works at Asia’s largest edu-tech platform startup.

Job prospects
Job opportunities for graduates of IPB University’s Aquatic Resource Management Study Program are wide open. Promising prospects that can be chosen include academics or researchers, bureaucrats or policymakers for aquatic resources and fisheries, aquatic environments, and conservation areas.

Graduates can also become practitioners in the field of aquatic environment, activists of conservation non-profit organizations (NGOs), entrepreneurs (start-ups) in the field of spatial zoning or fisheries planning. (MW/Rz) (IAAS/Aly)
