Department of KSHE IPB University Holds Public Lecture, Reviewing Carbon Trading

The Department of Forest Resources Conservation and Ecotourism (KHSE), Faculty of Forestry and Environment (Fahutan) IPB University held a Public Lecture (20/11) in the framework of the Independent Campus Competition Program (PKKM) in 2023.

The public lecture with the theme Carbon Trading: Making It Profitable was attended by 130 participants, consisting of KSHE students, postgraduate students, and alumni. The activity took place in the Smart Classroom Wing R, IPB Dramaga Campus.

In his speech, the Chair of KSHE Department of IPB University, Dr Nyoto Santoso talked about the importance of carbon trading. He also highlighted Indonesia’s active involvement, including the initiation of universities to be able to increase active participation in international carbon market schemes.

Two speakers from ACT Commodities Group, Iman Iman Nurul Suansa and Miss Theresa Teo, gave an explanation of carbon trade to the participants. ACT is a carbon trading company based in Singapore.

ACT’s Climate Technical Manager, Iman Nurul Suansa, talked about the integration of carbon trading with global standards and field conditions in Indonesia. He emphasized to the participants that they should always understand and practice the five fundamental components of carbon trading.

The five components include identifying forest land loss, determining an accurate land use and land cover (LULC) baseline, verifying carbon stocks by tree-level plants, avoiding leakage of carbon emissions around the target land and ensuring the sustainability of project implementation for the next few years.

Meanwhile, Miss Theresa Teo, ACT’s Sustainability Lead, explained about carbon trading globally. She also presented several case studies of carbon trading between companies and local communities.

“Some of these projects have provided real benefits both economically, environmentally and socially.” She also revealed some possibilities for IPB University’s participation in supporting carbon trading schemes, especially in Indonesia.

Furthermore, KSHE IPB University students, participants in the public lecture, presented the idea of carbon trading prospecting. The presentation was then responded to by the speakers.

Both speakers appreciated the ideas presented by the students while reminding them of the importance of identifying the problem of forest land cover change into open land.

The idea of developing carbon trading in Indonesia, especially in conservation areas, is possible in order to support global and national initiatives to improve environmental quality. (*/Rz) (IAAS/MZS)
