As a proactive step to increase awareness of work safety, the Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) IPB University held training on the use of light fire extinguishers (APAR).

The training was an integration step of the Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (K3L) course with training sessions on the use and prevention of fire as part of the curriculum.

Participants were students of IPB University class 59 who attended the K3L course, lecturers, administrative staff and resource persons from the Yasmin sector Fire Post, Bogor City. The activity began with a material session in the Multipurpose Room of the ITK Department, then continued with a practical session in the ITK parking lot, IPB Dramaga Campus.

The main objective of the training was to raise awareness of fire hazards and prepare participants in dealing with such emergency situations. The materials presented included extinguishing techniques using three different methods, namely the ‘smoothing’ method or blanket extinguishing, which aims to cut off the oxygen supply by using sacks, the use of fire extinguishers, and handling gas leaks.

Dr Syamsul Bahri Agus as the person in charge of the K3L course emphasised the importance of safety culture in the campus environment. “We at ITK are trying to strengthen the safety culture. I want students to know what to do in the event of an emergency, such as a fire,” he said.

There was enthusiasm from the students who eagerly tried out the various extinguishing techniques taught during the training session. Students were actively involved in practical sessions in the car park, applying the knowledge they had gained from the materials presented.

“Learning about fire extinguishers and how to deal with fires is not only theoretical in class, but this practical session gives us practical experience in the field,” said Satria, one of the students involved in the training event.

This training is an important momentum in preparing ITK students in dealing with emergency situations, as well as raising awareness of the importance of knowledge and skills in fire management. Hopefully, the safety awareness and practical knowledge gained from this event will continue to be improved and implemented in everyday life. (RAT/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
