The Faculty of Medicine of IPB University held a medical guest lecture with the topic ‘The Clinical Significance of Cell Polarity in Modulating Cell Structure and Functions’ in the Auditorium of AM Satari Building, IPB Dramaga Campus on 23/10. This activity invited a guest speaker from the Faculty of Medicine, Osaka University, Prof Akihiro Harada.

In his speech, the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of IPB University, Prof drh Srihadi Agungpriyono said this activity aims to share experimental research on cell polarity that has clinical significance in affecting cell structure and function.

“This is a subject that can be the focus of research in the field of cell biology and medicine,” he explained.

Furthermore, Prof Srihadi revealed that research like this could be relevant in various fields, including oncology, developmental biology, and neuroscience because cell polarity plays an important role in cellular regulation and function of cells.

By understanding how cell polarity affects cell structure and function, we can gain better insights in disease understanding and therapy development.

“I think this is a very good explanation of how research can support the scientific approach methods used in the clinical or medical field. For that, I hope the students can understand this science,” he said.

Osaka University lecturer Prof Akihiro Harada revealed that cell polarity can be a subject of research in relation to immune cells, coordinating and interacting with immune responses.

Understanding cell polarity helps in understanding how various organs and tissues in the body work.

“This is important in patient care and a better understanding of normal or pathological development,” he said.

Prof Akihiro Harada, furthermore, said cell polarity has important characteristics in many cell types in the body and plays a role in the regulation of various biological processes, including nutrient absorption, defense against pathogens and communication between cells.

“The role of cell polarity in various aspects of cell biology and human health has opened the door to new discoveries, more effective therapies and a deeper understanding of diseases and medical conditions in patients,” he said. (IAAS/MKY)
